Amir Khan Believes Alfredo Angulo Will Shock Canelo Alvarez on Saturday
British boxing icon Amir Khan believes that his stablemate Alfredo Angulo will pull off an upset over Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in their upcoming showdown on Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
In an interview with BoxingScene, Khan said that Angulo has been very impressive in training camp and he is confident that his trainer Virgil Hunter has devised a perfect fight plan to shock Alvarez.
"Alfredo has shown he can follow instructions and stick to the game plan and I'm sure Virgil has devised the right strategy for this fight," Khan said. "It's not going to be easy, but I know Alfredo is ready and can get the win."
Khan added that he can see in Angulo's eyes how determined he is to score a victory over his heavily-favored Mexican opponent.
The former champion Briton admitted that Angulo will have a tough night against Alvarez, but Khan quickly added that the 31-year-old Mexican will have a good chance as long he can keep his opponent working.
Angulo is coming off a 10th-round technical knockout loss to Erislandy Lara. Angulo managed to stand toe-to-toe with his opponent in that fight, and actually floored Lara during the fourth and ninth rounds of their bout in June last year.
"It's not going to be an easy fight against Canelo because Canelo is a slick boxer and moves quite well but Angulo showed against Lara how good he is at cutting off the ring. Angulo might be seen as the underdog but under Virgil you've seen the progress he's made and you can be sure he'll force Canelo to work every minute of every round," Khan said.
Khan noted that Canelo is also expected to go all out as he is aching to prove that he is still one of the best pound-for-pound boxers today despite absorbing his first loss in September.
The 23-year-old Mexican is coming off a majority decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. during their middleweight title showdown in September last year.
"It's going to be an excellent fight because they're both at the top of their game. I know Canelo is coming off the loss to Mayweather but he's still a great fighter who's looking to bounce back and show he's still one of the best out there," Khan said.
