2014 Oscars Recap, Highlights: The 8 Best Moments from the Academy Awards
Didn't catch the Oscars? Or maybe you want to relive the night. Either way, here's everything Oscars you need to know about Sunday night.
1. Lupita Nyong'o wins
Not only did she look beyond amazing in a Nairobi blue Prada gown, but she also won last night. And everything about her win was noteworthy. As she walked up the stairs, she grabbed her skirt and elegantly made her way to the podium. Her speech was also beautiful and she finished with, "No matter where you're from, your dreams are valid."
2. The celebrity filled selfie
Ellen DeGeneres wanted to have the most retweeted picture and asked all her celebrity pals in the front rows to pose, but it wasn't just memorable because it broke Twitter. Bradley Cooper wanted to take the picture, but Ellen was against it. When she added too many people, she had to let Cooper take it. Jared Leto was way under the phone, which meant he wasn't even posing for the photo. Jennifer Lawrence sat on Meryl Streep's lap. Lupita Nyong'o is barely seen in the background, but her brother is prominently displayed in the front. And perhaps the saddest part of all—Liza Minnelli tried to get into the picture, but you couldn't see her at all.
3. Jennifer Lawrence ate
Ellen got pizza delivered to the show, and some people, like Jennifer Lawrence, made sure to get a slice. Jamie Foxx's daughter, Corinne Foxx, also said that she spotted Lawrence eating beef jerky during the commercial breaks. Basically, Jennifer Lawrence was enjoying herself.
4. Angelina Jolie was so happy
It started off with her dress: a sparkly Elie Saab. It was unlike anything she had worn in recent years, and must have put her in such a good mood because she was having a blast. She participated in the selfie and waved to the cameras. She sat in the crowd and laughed. And she was so sweet to Sidney Poitier, walking patiently with him.
5. John Travolta made a blunder
John Travolta was supposed to introduce Idina Menzel, who was singing "Let It Go," but he ended up introducing Adele Dazeem. We're not sure what happened, but it was a very obvious gaffe and people made sure it trended on Twitter.
6. Pharrell's performance
You expect Pharrell's "Happy" to be, well, happy. But he took the performance into the audience. He got Lupita Nyong'o, Meryl Streep and Amy Adams to dance with him. Also, dancing on the stage was Jamie Foxx and his daughter, who was so excited to be there.
7. Bill Murray's tribute
Bill Murray was presenting best cinematography prize when he decided to pay tribute to his late co-star Harold Ramis. The two also grew up together in Chicago, so it was a touching moment.
8. Jared Leto's speech
Jared Leto was considered the heavy favorite to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, and when his name was called, he gave a truly wonderful speech. He spoke about how his mother was a high school dropout and pregnant with her second child, and how she made sure he and his brother had better. He also spoke of the people in Ukraine and Venezuela: "To all the dreamers out there around the world watching this tonight in places like the Ukraine and Venezuela, I want to say we are here and as you struggle to... to make your dreams happen, to live the impossible... We're thinking of you tonight." It was all humble and it hit the right notes.
