Oscars 2014 Fashion: Red Carpet Highs and Lows
The biggest night in Hollywood took place tonight. Some brought their A-game, while others fell just short. Here are the highs and lows of the 2014 red carpet.
Let us remind you: Olivia Wilde is pregnant. Just as with the Golden Globes, Wilde went sexy. This time around she wore a Valentino dress with a high collar, and a surprise white-paneled back. It's unexpected, and her dress is so elegant. And this is proof that something simple is not necessarily boring, which is reflected in her makeup. The minimal look includes a cateye. She did a great job. Even fiancé Jason Sudeikis can't help but be impressed.
White can easily go into bridal territory, but this textured Calvin Klein, designed by Francisco Costa, does not give off that vibe. Plus, Naomi Watts managed to accessorize beautifully. A chunky necklace resting at the top of the dress' hemline and a geometric purse that mimics the necklace work well together. Her dress also has a slit on the back.
If we were just judging the back of Anna Kendrick's J. Mendel dress, it would be a different story. The back features criss-cross straps and is just beautiful. The front has one element too many. Perhaps if it didn't have a high-low hem, then it would easily rank in the top. As it stands, it has just a little too much going on. But Kendrick did wear one of the most interesting frocks this year.
Amy Adams didn't go for the vintage hair that suits her so well, but she didn't disappoint. This blue Gucci is form fitting, which seems to be a trend at tonight's red carpet, and it looks stunning against her red hair. A lot of people couldn't pull off that slight peplum on her hips, or the extra fabric at the top of the dress, but Adams does and looks true movie star doing it.
Beautiful! Lupita Nyong'o chose to wear Prada, and she said she had a hand in creating the Grecian-inspired gown. The blue reminded her of home, and since she has worn such bold colors this red carpet season, this lighter color really feels special. The dress also has a little bit of glimmer throughout, which is subtle but still makes an impact.
This is how a movie star dresses when all eyes are on her. Cate Blanchett wore this nude Armani gown, and we suspected that she would go for a pale color because, even though it goes against all logic, it looks amazing on her. It's both delicate and flashy, and she wore chandelier earrings to finish off the look.
Well, we were wrong. Even in a sleek number, Jennifer Lawrence managed to fall, this time on the red carpet. She wore an orange-red Dior gown, and it also had peplum. The peplum is not our favorite feature, but the bright color and the shape are perfect.
No one sparkled brighter than Anne Hathaway, and still this was an appropriate choice for a presenter. She went the sleek route as well in this Gucci number, and it's a nice change from her pale pink dress from last year.
Emma Watson went dark for the Oscars in Vera Wang, but it ended up reminding us more of Gwyneth Paltrow's goth gown. This one has more sparkle than that, but we wish she had gone a bit more daring.
Idina Menzel also went for Vera Wang, but the color was also a bit dark. The dress itself is actually very beautiful, but it wasn't executed perfectly. The necklace feels out of place, and her hair falls too flat.
Angelina Jolie wore an Elie Saab gown, and we love about 85 percent of it. It sparkles! This is such an un-Angelina Jolie move. Mostly, it's the fit on the top half that we have some issues with. But it was surprising, and because she stepped out of her comfort zone, she gets some bonus points.
