NFL Trade Rumors: Mark Sanchez Likely to Be Traded; NY Jets Target Michael Vick

The New York Jets are reportedly considering trading quarterback Mark Sanchez while veteran signal-caller Michael Vick has surfaced as a potential free-agency target for the franchise, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported on Thursday.

According to Rapoport, the Jets have not informed Sanchez about their future plans with his current team next season.

"Jets haven't told Sanchez he's gone. Would be shocked if he isn't RT @gemcos12: @RapSheet Don't see Sanchez returning. Vick may be an option," Rapoport posted on his Twitter account.

ESPNNewYork.com Rich Cimini indicated that the former USC standout has a small chance of staying with the franchise.

"One source said the chances of Sanchez returning are about 20 to 30 percent," reported Cimini. "Obviously, he'd have to accept a large pay cut. Look for this to play out until March 25, when a $2 million roster bonus is due -- or until they find his replacement."

Wide-Open Race for Starting Quarterback
Geno Smith, the 39th overall pick in 2012 NFL Draft, threw for 3,046 yards with 12 touchdowns last season. However, the rookie signal-caller completed just 55.8 percent of his passes and had 22 interceptions with a mediocre quarterback rating of 66.5.

Several NFL insiders believe the Jets have to provide Smith stiff competition at training camp, and a seasoned player like Vick could bring the best out in the young quarterback.

The 33-year-old Vick threw for 1,215 yards with five touchdowns in seven games for the Eagles. He lost his starting quarterback job to 25-year-old Nick Foles, who completed 2,891 passing yards with 27 touchdowns last season.

According to NFL insider Phil Sheridan, Vick might be the answer the Jets are looking for in their attempt to get back to an elite level. Vick said he has two or three years of high-level football left in the tank, and the presence offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg could make things easier for him in New York.

"In football terms, Vick would be reunited with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, who held that title for Vick's first four season with the Eagles," wrote ESPN's Phil Sheridan. "Mornhinweg would be as well-equipped as any coach in the league to get the most out of Vick at this late stage in his career."
