'The Big Bang Theory' Season 7 Episode 16 Spoilers: Will Sheldon Break Up With Amy After Sharing a Kiss? [Video]
After reaching a major milestone in their relationship and sharing an unexpected kiss, fans of "The Big Bang Theory" will finally get the chance to see what happens next to Sheldon and Amy this Thursday, Feb. 27.
The surprising kiss occurred during a special Valentine's Day episode of the long-running comedy series earlier this month. The science-loving pair was on a romantic train getaway with Howard and Bernadette. However, the ride started to go south because Sheldon was ignoring Amy and began spending time with a random stranger. The pair then got into a heated argument and Sheldon kissed his girlfriend in the heat of the tiff to prove that he was romantic.
The kiss was a huge shock for the fans and the geeky couple alike since Sheldon is a stubborn, neurotic and socially inept theoretical physicist who is against the idea of physical contact and intimacy. Although they took a giant step forward in their relationship, a promo of the next episode suggests that Sheldon gets cold feet after Leonard decides to do some new decorating. Sheldon begins to think that the relationship is moving too fast and that he has lost a part of himself, notes CarterMatt. As a result, he goes to Amy's apartment with the intention of ending the relationship.
The official synopsis for the upcoming episode, entitled "The Table Polarization," states: "Leonard buys a dining room table and it causes Sheldon to reevaluate the changes in his life. Meanwhile, Wolowitz is offered a chance to go back to space and Bernadette struggles with whether or not to encourage him."
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Steve Molaro revealed that he and the show writers decided to incorporate Sheldon and Amy's epic lip-lock in a way that would honor both of the character's uniqueness while helping Sheldon to move forward.
"We knew we were going to do this Valentine's Day episode where Amy manages to get Sheldon to go up to Napa for the weekend by using the train as bait. And you know, their relationship is great, but I think there's only so much Amy can take," said the EP. "We do need to keep it moving forward even if it's in baby steps, and I was just feeling that it was time. She deserved a big win, and this seemed like a good way to get to it. Rather than it coming from his excitement, [we wanted] it to almost stem from an argument. It seemed like an exciting way for it to happen.
He added that "we felt it would be nice to see that there was no giant shift in who Sheldon was." He continued, saying, "while there was a small shift and he didn't dislike the kiss, he's still Sheldon. I thought that was a way for that scene to show that. So there was a little growth - he didn't dislike the kiss, but he also liked when the conductor played the banjo and meeting his new friend, Eric, who loves trains as much as he does."
During a recent appearance on NBC's Today, Mayim Bialik hinted that there may be more kissing in store for her character Amy and Sheldon. "There may be more," she teased, before adding, "who knows?"
"The Big Bang Theory" S7E16, "The Table Polarization," will air on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 8 p.m. on CBS.
