Miguel Cotto Could Train With Manny Pacquiao in Upcoming Bout Against Sergio Martinez
Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KOs) will reportedly fly to the Philippines to kick off his training camp under Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach for his upcoming bout against Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KOs).
Cotto, who will look to win his fourth title in four different divisions on June 7 at Madison Square Garden in New York, could train with his former foe Manny Pacquiao in the Philippines.
In a recent interview with ABS-CBN News, Roach, who handles both Pacquiao and Cotto, said that the Puerto Rican fighter might join the Filipino boxing icon in his training camp, but the veteran trainer played down earlier rumors that the former rivals will spar with each other.
"That is false," Roach said on rumors suggesting that Cotto will spar with Pacquiao. "Cotto might come here if we stay long enough, to come and see the Philippines and train with Manny. But [Cotto will] not spar with him."
Roach pointed out that pitting Pacquiao and Cotto against each other in sparring sessions makes no sense because despite facing each other before, Cotto is now fighting at 160 pounds, while Pacquiao is still in the 147-pound division.
According to the veteran promoter, he has already mapped out his training plans for Pacquiao's next fight against Timothy Bradley on April 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The Filipino boxing icon will have sparring sessions with Lydell Rhodes and will spar with former world champion Kendall Holt once Pacquiao arrives in Los Angeles.
Cotto Plays Down Martinez's Claim of Disrespect
Meanwhile, Cotto spoke for the first time about the allegations from Martinez, who previously said that his upcoming bout against the former light middleweight champion will be personal.
Martinez and his camp said that they are motivated to go all out on Fight Night, saying that they want to make Cotto pay for his disrespectful act when he refused to shake hands with Martinez during one encounter at an ESPN studio a few years ago.
Cotto played down the allegations, saying that he never had a falling out with the Argentinian middleweight champion, and added that he would never do such a thing as refuse to shake his hand.
"I've never had a falling out with him. That is not true. We had no falling out of any kind. Never [would I do anything like that], I have always been a gentleman," Cotto said in an interview with BoxingScene published Sunday.
