NHL Trade Rumors 2014: Martin Brodeur Could Be Dealt Before Deadline; New Jersey Devils Asking Him to Waive No-Trade Clause
The New Jersey Devils could be on the brink of ushering in a new era between the pipes, as reports have indicated the club's plans to move longtime goaltender Martin Brodeur before the trade deadline, a source close to situation reported on Friday.
Brodeur, who has been the face of the franchise on the defensive end for almost three decades, could find himself net-minding for another team as the possibility of him being traded grows with each passing day.
In the latest rumors around the NHL, the Devils have reportedly met with Brodeur in an attempt to convince him to waive his no-trade clause. New Jersey's front office has been looking for solid compensation for Brodeur, who struggled mightily this season.
"TVA reporter Reaud Lavoie reports that Brodeur met with team officials on Wednesday and will likely be asked to waive his no-trade clause so the team can send him elsewhere. So while many assumed the goalie would retire a member of the Devils, New Jersey appears to have other plans for their faithful veteran," Sports World Report reported.
The 41-year-old Brodeur said that he hasn't been informed about the Devils' plans for him, insisting he's going to be patient in his rehabilitation so he can come back in tip-top shape and contribute for the team.
"I don't know. I haven't thought about it until I talk to people, and there is nothing planned yet. I'm probably going to wait," Brodeur said, via NJ.com. "I have no indication one way or the other that anything is going to happen.
"I haven't discussed it with anybody really about what my plans are going to be for the next 23 games. I haven't talked to the coach about playing time, either. I'm just going to get back into playing shape for the next seven days and we'll see if I'm able to get the net."
Cory Schneider has been the Devils' premier goaltender this season, appearing in the last 23 games before the NHL took a break for the Olympic Games. According to analysts, Schneider's appearance in the game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Feb. 23 would suggest the end of the road for one of the most decorated NHL goalies of all time.
As Sports World Report noted, the Buffalo Sabers, who have been itching to move Ryan Miller, as well as the Chicago Blackhawks and the Washington Capitals could be potential landing spots for Brodeur.
