NBA Trade Rumors 2014: Toronto Raptors, Sacramento Kings Interested in Acquiring Rajon Rondo
The Boston Celtics are still keeping Rajon Rondo off the trading block, but recent reports indicated that the Celtics would consider trading their starting point guard if given an irresistible offer—one that could be offered by the Toronto Raptors or the Sacramento Kings.
Reports on Monday indicated that Toronto and Sacramento have been showing strong interest in acquiring the superstar point guard before Thursday's trade deadline.
According to the Toronto Sun, the Raptors are currently in talks with multiple teams about a potential deal that would send Rondo to Toronto before the deadline.
Sources said that the Raptors will move Kyle Lowry, possibly to the New York Knicks, if they can strike a deal that would give them an upgrade on their point guard rotation.
"It's no secret Boston has dangled four-time all-star Rajon Rondo league-wide and while the asking price is steep, he has piqued the interest of Toronto's front office, according to multiple sources. Toronto is eager to up its "star" quotient and is also enamored with Rondo's resume, particularly his four all-defensive team selections," the Toronto Sun reported.
However, it is unclear what assets the Raptors are willing to give up in a trade for Rondo. Recent reports indicated that the Celtics will only trade Rondo for a package involving two unprotected first-round NBA Draft picks.
Aside from the Raptors, the Kings are also reportedly engaged in talks with the Celtics about a potential deal for Rondo, with sources saying that Sacramento has already put an offer on the table.
According to Yahoo Sports, the Kings and the Raptors had initial talks about a deal involving the Kings' emerging guard Isaiah Thomas, rookie shooting guard Ben McLemore, and possibly a first-round pick.
However, talks have reportedly stalled because Rondo is showing no interest in re-signing with the Kings once his contract expires after the 2014-15 NBA season.
Reports indicated that the Kings are not willing to give up McLemore without getting a longterm commitment from Rondo, who is expected to become one of the most coveted free agents in the summer of 2015.
"Source said Kings and C's discussed a deal involving Isaiah Thomas, Ben McLemore and a pick for Rajon Rondo, but Rondo wasn't interested in re-signing with Sacramento and the Kings strongly value McLemore," Yahoo Sports noted.
