NBA Trade Rumors 2014: Brooklyn Nets in Talks to Acquire Sacramento Kings’ Marcus Thornton, LA Lakers’ Jordan Hill

The Brooklyn Nets are reportedly one of the more active teams on the trade front as the deadline approaches and reports indicate that they are currently in talks with the Sacramento Kings, Los Angeles Lakers, and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reported that the Nets are currently in deep talks with the Kings about a potential trade that would send Marcus Thornton to Brooklyn for veteran guard Jason Terry and hardworking forward Reggie Evans.

Sources said that the Nets are looking to acquire impact players in hopes of making a strong playoff push this season.

Thornton has been struggling all season long, averaging just 8.3 points on 38.1 percent shooting from the field, but the 26-year-old shooting guard has proven that he can contribute well if given enough playing time.

The five-year veteran averaged 18.7 points in 51 starts for the Kings during the 2011-12 NBA season.

The Nets are currently in seventh place in the Eastern Conference standings with their 24-27 record, and acquiring an impact player could improve their chances of barging into the top four, which would give them home-court advantage at least in the first round of the 2014 NBA Playoffs.

Aside from Thornton, the Nets are also reportedly looking to acquire Jordan Hill from the Los Angeles Lakers. Sources said that the Nets and the Lakers had initial discussions about a potential trade, but no deal is imminent at this point.

According to reports, the Nets are planning to use their $5.25 Disabled Player Exception in a trade for Hill.

Acquiring Hill would increase the Nets' luxury tax penalty for this season, but their executives are reportedly willing to pay the price as long as it would improve their chances of winning a title this season.

"The luxury tax penalty from absorbing Hill's contract would be extraordinary for Brooklyn - nearly $17 million. Hill could give the Nets a capable power forward and center replacement for a postseason run, but ultimately ownership would have to be willing to sign off on expanding its record $190 million-plus combined payroll and luxury tax," Wojnarowski noted in his report.

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Jarrett Jack was also reportedly offered to the Nets in exchange for Terry, but Brooklyn turned down the offer because of Jack's contract.

Jack is set to earn $12.6 million in the final two years of his contract that runs through the 2015-16 season.
