'50 Shades of Grey' Movie News: January Jones Criticizes 'Fifty Shades' Poster for Copying 'Mad Men' Billboard
Apparently, not everyone has been pleased with the first official poster for the upcoming film adaption of "Fifty Shades of Grey."
The black-and-white poster, which was released Jan. 24 by the film's official Twitter page, shows the protagonist Christian Grey in his office overlooking the city of Seattle. The kinky billionaire, played by actor Jamie Dornan, is wearing a tailored suit and expensive shoes and has his hands in his pockets while his back turned away from the camera. The tagline reads, "Mr. Grey Will See You Now," teasing the excitement of his romance with Anastasia Steele, played by co-star Dakota Johnson.
While the poster was praised for perfectly capturing Grey's sexy, suggestive, and mysterious mystique, actress January Jones says the poster is unoriginal and emulates "Mad Men's" Season 4 poster.
Jones, who has starred in "Mad Men" since the series debuted in 2007, uploaded a photo of the "Fifty Shades" poster on her Instagram account with the caption, "Does this look familiar to anyone else? #madmenpostercirca2010." According to the 36-year-old actress, the Universal ads for "50 Shades of Grey," closely resembles a "Mad Men" billboard which shows the main character, Don Draper, staring out of a high-rise office window. In both images the dignified and successful men are dressed in dark, dapper suits while leaving at least one hand in their pocket.
The "X-Men: First Class" star wasn't the only person that seemed to think the posters were similar being that her post garnered over 900 likes.
One user wrote, "Just saw this in Chicago. Did a double-take. Time to call the lawyers @januaryjones," notes the Daily Mail. While another agreed, writing, "They clearly hired the wrong advertising agency. #sterlingcooperforever."
