7 Beauty Mistakes Your Skin Can't Afford This Winter

By Yara Simón| Feb 15, 2014

Maybe it's because we're dealing with so many layers of clothing and generally worrying about being warm when outside, but skincare regimens can fall by the wayside in winter. Unfortunately, this is one of the harshest times of the year on our skin, and you have to be extra careful. Here's what you should avoid.

1. Not wearing sunscreen

Sunscreen is a must at any time of the year. Not only does it even out skin tone and help with fine lines, it also protects you against the sun when you can't feel it. It's the same reason you should wear sunscreen even if it's rainy out. Also, snow is a reflective surface, which can make the sun more damaging in the winter. This is why skiers end up with sunburn if not properly protected.

2. Showering with hot water

Don't use hot water to warm up during the winter because it can suck the moisture out of your skin. The outside layer of skin produces a thin layer of oil and the hot water can effectively melt it away. Go for tepid water instead.

3. Not drinking enough water

This is also thought of as a summer problem, but drinking water in the winter is just as important. Your body isn't getting as much moisture because the air is drier.

4. Choosing the wrong chapstick

Chapped lips are absolutely awful, and what's worse is that not all chapsticks are created equally. They may soothe your lips when you put it on, but the effects won't be long lasting. Make sure your lip balm doesn't contain menthol or you'll lips will be dried out again. Keep in mind that lips do not have a sebaceous gland, which means they don't have any protection against the cold if left alone.

5. Forgetting your hair

Yes, the winter gets rid of frizziness and may make your hair look smoother, but your hair still needs some love come winter. Use extra conditioners or other products that will help lock in moisture. No one wants dry, brittle hair.

6. Not exfoliating

Get rid of that layer of dead skin so your skin looks vibrant.

7. Skipping the moisturizer

Your skin will thank you for moisturizing, and surely, having smooth skin will make you happier, too. Your fingertips, toes, heels, elbows, cuticles and neck need more moisturizer at this time of the year. Here's where you can buy the best moisturizers that cost less than $20.
