PS4 News: Price Drops in UK GameStop Stores, but Sale Unsanctioned by Sony
The first unofficial price drop for the PlayStation 4 is available at GameStop in the United Kingdom, cutting £20 off the normal £349.99 price tag for the console.
GameStop independently dropped the price on the PS4, making this the first reported price drop on the console anywhere in the world. The price drop can be seen on the official online branch for GameStop. This version of the PlayStation 4 is the standard edition, meaning that for the discounted price, users will only receive the console and Dualshock 4 controller.
While this is not an indication that Sony is dropping the price of the PS4, it does show that retailers are beginning to have enough supply to start offering local deals.
However, many locations both in the United Kingdom and the United States are still sold out of the console, and even Amazon.com is currently sold out of the system. Perhaps more interesting is the fact that Amazon cannot match this discount because it is sold out of PS4s, despite the company's usual policy of matching sale prices on electronics.
While the PlayStation 4 is just not getting its first reported price drop, rival Xbox One has already had retailers dropping the price of the console for special sale days, including the United Kingdom branch of GameStop.
Some gamers may hope that this sale in the United Kingdom may show that Sony will be dropping the price of the console worldwide, but it is highly unlikely that the machine will see a price change anytime in 2014. With demand for the PlayStation 4 still preventing the system from regularly appearing on store shelves and with online retailers, Sony has no reason to drop the price for the PlayStation 4.
The PS4 has proven to be a smash success for Sony. The system is currently outselling the Xbox One worldwide. Sony confirmed in their "State of the Platform" address that the console has sold 4.2 million units worldwide since launch, despite not being available in Japan yet and facing supply challenges across the globe. Current figures for the Xbox One have the console selling around 3 million units worldwide.
