New PlayStation Vita Model Coming in Spring With Borderlands 2 for $200 [Video]
The PlayStation Vita is getting a new model and Sony is sweetening the deal even more by offering Borderlands 2 and much of the DLC for the game bundled with the system for $200, Sony announced through a new video.
The new PlayStation Vita is promoted as lighter and thinner than the current models of the handheld, but how much the specs differ between the two machines has yet to be determined. The other big new feature that Sony is promoting is a longer battery life for the new Vita. Instead of the OLED screen currently found on the PlayStation Vitas, the new Vita will have a LED screen, Kotaku reported.
This may anger some purists who feel that OLED technology is better than LED, so users may want to buy the current model if that is a dealbreaker for them.
The new Vita will be released in a limited-edition Borderlands 2 bundle in the spring 2014 for $200. The bundle will have the critically-acclaimed game along with six of the DLC packs for the game and a 8GB memory card. Borderlands 2 will feature cross-platform saves between the handheld and PlayStation 3 version of the game.
The PlayStation Vita has enjoyed a spike in sales thanks to a well timed price drop and the handheld's ability to connect with the PlayStation 4. The PlayStation 4 is able to use the Vita for Remote Play, so games on the PlayStation 4 can be streamed to the handheld so the television can be freed up for other uses. This is similar to the way the Wii U Gamepad can work with the console and the way the Xbox One and Windows Smartglass can interact. It is also possible for some games to use the Vita as a controller and as a way to unlock second screen content.
While the PlayStation Vita has an uphill battle when it comes to matching the success of the Nintendo 3DS and smartphone gaming, with the new model of the console and a growing library of games to choose from the Vita may be in for a strong 2014.
