Floyd Mayweather Jr's Father Tells Manny Pacquiao to Leave Bob Arum For Fight With his Son
Floyd Mayweather Jr's father wants to see his son square off with Manny Pacquiao in the near future. And for the super fight to happen, Floyd Sr. gave a piece of advice to the Filipino boxing icon on Monday.
In an interview with BoxingScene, the elder Mayweather said that Pacquiao should force his way out of Top Rank Promotions and break his ties with famed promoter Bob Arum.
Mayweather Jr. previously reiterated that the potential record-breaking showdown will not materialize until Pacquiao ends his ties with Arum, whose company, Top Rank Promotions, hold the promotional rights to Pacquiao until the end of the year.
"Pacquiao, I think he should take that fight with my son and delete Bob Arum out of the situation and go for what he can go for, do the best he can do because right now he ain't doing very good," Mayweather Sr. said via BoxingScene.
Mayweather Sr. also told Pacquiao to follow in Floyd Jr. and Oscar Dela Hoya's footsteps; both prize fighters parted ways with Arum while at their peak.
"Oscar De La Hoya left Bob Arum, my son left Bob Arum, these were the biggest fighters in the world at the time they left Bob Arum, and they are some of the biggest fighters still today. I think if Pacquiao had any sense, I think he would jump on the same wagon and get rolling," stressed Mayweather Sr.
But while he believes that the former pound-for-pound king will be in a better position to land a fight against his son if he leaves Arum, Mayweather Sr. clarified that he has nothing against the promoter, saying that Arum has been very good to him particularly during the times his son was still under Top Rank Promotions.
"Don't get me wrong, by no means necessary, I don't have no problems with Bob Arum," Mayweather Sr. said. "Bob Arum has been good to me at times when my son was working with him, but it is what it is."
Both fighters will return to the ring soon. Pacquiao is set to face Timothy Bradley in a rematch on April 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Mayweather Jr. will fight again on May 3 against a yet-to-be-named opponent, but it is widely believed that British boxing icon Amir Khan will be the next foe of the reigning pound-for-pound king.
