Celebrate The Beatles' 50th Anniversary With ‘60s Hair & Makeup
The 1960s was big on The Beatles, but it was also the decade of the eyes. To celebrate the iconic band's 50th anniversary, here are the defining features of '60s makeup. Combine as few or many of them in one look, or try one of the hairstyles that women popularized that decade.
Blue Eyeshadow: Makeup was not subtle in the 1960s, in large part because of the blue eyeshadow. To separate it from today's use of blue, which blends different shades for a smokier look, try just one bright blue.
Lashes Like Twiggy: Part of Twiggy's compelling eye makeup were her bottom row of lashes. The painted-on lashes were dramatic, and didn't look natural at all. To achieve this look, grab a liquid eyeliner and draw on the lashes, leaving a small space between one lash and the next. The outer edges should be the longest, and they should shorten as your work your way in.
Cateye: The cateye continues to be trendy, as evidenced by Ginnifer Goodwin. There's no wrong way to approach this look. Make it thick and heavy, short and skinny or have it point up or down. The choice is up to you. Place a piece of tape along your eye to better achieve your desired shape. After you have painted it on using the tape as a guide, just peel it off, and you'll reveal a straight, neat cateye.
Accentuated Eye Fold: No wonder eyes were so dramatic in the '60s. Women took to highlighting their eye folds with makeup. Take an eyeliner and draw along the crease. Don't be shy, and have it flick out to achieve a double cateye.
Bouffant: Women of the '60s went for the Marie Antoinette look. Whatever your technique, expect to backcomb. Here's one way: Place about half your hair in Velcro rollers to help with volume. Then take small pieces of hair and start backcombing with a fine-toothed comb, working from the back to front. Put the hair back and style using your fingers and not a comb. Tie the section of hair, and leave the front part untouched, which you will then use to wrap around the teased hair. This creates the bouffant at the crown of your head.
Pixie: This is another '60s trend that has managed to have longevity. Emma Watson, Ginnifer Goodwin and Anne Hathaway are a few celebrities that have made the cut in recent years. The biggest piece of advice when seeking this haircut? Make sure the cut flatters your face.
