Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics Fashion: Judging Pairs Figure Skating Costumes, Olympics Style

By Yara Simón| Feb 07, 2014

We took figure skating’s judging formula and used a modified version to find out what figure skating pair was the best dressed at the Olympics. As with the real event, each member of the team needs the others to do well. Each receives an individual score out of 100, which are added together.

Ukraine- Julia Lavrentieva and Yuri Rudyk
He is wearing a lime green shirt, that’s accented with black. Score: 60 She has cutouts everywhere. Though, very on trend, the illusion netting color is off and there are too many competing elements. Score: 64
 Overall score: 124

UK- Stacey Kemp and David King
He paired a gray vest with a pink shirt. Too different shades of gray, patterns and a tie make this a very busy look. Score: 60 She is overly embellished in the top half, but the bottom half almost makes up for it. Score: 68
 Overall Score: 128

Germany- Daniel Wende and Maylin Wende
He is in a grayish-blue shirt that could use some life. Score: 70 She is in an equally sad-looking color. The disjointed look is half sparkle and half ombre. Score: 63
Overall score: 133

Japan- Narumi Takahashi and Ryuichi Kihara
He should have opted for a sparkled shirt or pants, but certainly not both. Score: 66 She is wearing a red dress with an embellished halter neckline, as well as cutouts across her midriff. One less cutout could have made this look just interesting enough. Score: 70
Overall score: 136

France- Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres
He has a black vest with sequined pinstripes and a hint of purple piping. From afar, it really works, but those extra details just don’t. Score: 70 She is in a bright, happy purple. The dress has a sequined hemline and beading on the back. Score: 70
Overall score: 140

USA- Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir
He is wearing head-to-toe black. But the minimalist looks fails to show much of his personality. Score: 82 She is also in black, but not entirely. Her dress has a sheer bodice, a slit and sparkles. Score: 74
Overall score: 156

Russia- Maxim Trankov and Tatiana Volosozhar
He is in Prince Charming getup. It's eye catching in the right ways. Score: 95 She is Cinderella. Her choker is a bit too distracting that fight with the intricate beading on her dress and the small flowers in her hair. The off-the-shoulder straps are a nice touch, though. Score: 65
Overall score: 160

Canada- Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford
He is in gray, with just a few sequins sprinkled throughout. It’s not the most vibrant color, but it’s not entirely plain. Score: 80 She is wearing a pale pink that also has subtle sequins. It’s overall a sweet look. Score: 88
Overall score: 168

Italy- Stefania Berton and Ondrej Hotarek
He is wearing bright yellow pants, and drawing attention away from his partner. But, it doesn’t go further than that. The rest of the outfit is relatively simple, with a fun pair of checkered suspenders. Score: 73 She donned a stunning dress. An embossed mini dress in gold that could easily be transformed for real-life wear. The yellow fringe captures movement as she’s tossed in the air. Score: 96
Overall score: 169

China- Peng Cheng and Zhang Hao
He is in blue and green. His shirt is a good balance of color and shine. Score: 82 She has the right amount of sparkle and pizzazz. Score: 90
Overall score: 172
