Boxing News: Floyd Mayweather Jr. May Have Lost $10.4 Million Betting on Super Bowl 2014
Boxing's pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. might have indeed bet $10.4 million and lost on Sunday's Super Bowl XLVIII, despite releasing a statement that debunked rumors of his latest stint on the betting floor.
Days before the Super Bowl, multiple news sources reported about Mayweather's huge bet on the Denver Broncos to beat the Seattle Seahawks. Several Las Vegas bookies backed up the reports, testifying about Money May's massive wager on the Broncos.
However, in an interview with Fight Hype, Mayweather, through his representative, quickly dismissed the bet rumors, stressing people should not believe baseless information right away unless it came from him and his representatives (Al Haymon and Leonard Ellerbe).
"No, that's not true at all," stated Mayweather's personal massage therapist, Doralie Medina, who was with "Money" when Fight Hype asked if there was any truth to the rumors.
"Though he was unavailable for an immediate comment, Mayweather could be heard in the background stating, 'How many times do I have to say if it doesn't come from me, Leonard [Ellerbe] or Al [Haymon], it's not true?' Floyd was just laughing about that, but no, Ben, you can let everyone know that it's not true," he added.
The 36-year-old Mayweather even congratulated the Seahawks for routing the Denver Broncos, 43-8, at Super Bowl XLVII. He said again that he never placed a bet, saying the rumors had kept him relevant during Super Bowl week.
"Congratulations to the Seattle Seahawks for winning the Super Bowl. For the record, I did NOT bet $10 million on The Broncos. As a matter of fact, I didn't bet at alI. I can't control what rumors are put out there," Mayweather posted on his Twitter account.
"But good or bad publicity keeps me relevant. The only thing I would bet $10.5 million on is MYSELF because from the looks of my record, I'm a guaranteed WIN!!! I'm focused on that, my company www.themoneyteam.com and my tech investments," he added.
However, there are still a number of people who believe Mayweather indeed bet and lost $10.4 million, and he just chose to deny it to save face from embarrassment and jeers from the fans.
Whether the rumors are true or not, Mayweather Jr. appears to be the real winner, after all. Mayweather might have lost big chunk of money, but $10 million doesn't even comprise one-eighth of his total fortune. Money May earned over $100 million last year following his victories over Robert Guerrero and Saul Canelo Alvarez. He's expected to earn more this year from his upcoming fights on May 3 and in September.
