Celebrities Mourn the Death of Award-Winning Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman
Academy Award-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his West Village apartment earlier today of an apparent drug overdose. He was 46 years old.
The Wall Street Journal broke the news of the actor's death, citing a law enforcement official. According to the official, Hoffman was found in the bathroom of his fourth floor apartment in the Pickwick House at about 11:15 a.m. by screenwriter David Katz, who then called 911. WSJ reporter Pervaiz Shallwani, who initially broke the story, reported that law enforcement officials found the actor with a needle in his arm.
Later reports state that NYPD sources found evidence of injectable drugs at the scene. The cause of death has yet to be determined.
The New York Times reports that the actor had undergone treatment for drug addition in the past. After remaining clean for 23 years, Hoffman reportedly spoke in interviews about "falling off the wagon."
Hoffman is perhaps best known for his award winning performance in the 2005 film "Capote." He would go on to win the Best Actor Academy Award and the Golden Globe Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture--Drama for his role as Truman Capote. However, Hoffman's breakout role was in the 1997 film "Boogie Nights." According to ABC News, the actor was also nominated for three Best Supporting Actor Oscars for "The Master," "Doubt" and "Charlie Wilson's War."
The actor was currently working on the final two installments of "The Hunger Games" series.
Like many of his fans, Hollywood turned to Twitter to send their condolences for the actor's untimely death.
