NBA Trade Rumors 2014 Update: Boston Celtics Could Trade Rajon Rondo to New Orleans Pelicans, Detroit Pistons, Sacramento Kings
Rajon Rondo is working his way back from an ACL injury and has played in his first two games this season. Aside from checking what Rondo can bring to the team after returning from a major injury, the Celtics could also gauge what they can get from other teams interested in acquiring the superstar point guard.
The Celtics have repeatedly denied rumors involving Rondo, but The NY Daily News reports that the majority of the teams are convinced Boston will move the All-Star point guard—either before the deadline next month or before the 2014 NBA Draft.
"Rondo is the last blue chip from the 2008 championship team and 2010 Finals team that Celtics president Danny Ainge can convert into assets as he rebuilds the franchise," reported The NY Daily News. Recent rumors suggested that the New Orleans Pelicans could be interested in acquiring Rondo to pair him up with emerging center Anthony Davis even if it means that they should part ways with their current starting point guard Jrue Holiday.
Fox Sports reported that the Pelicans are also open to trading Eric Gordon and Tyreke Evans. Both players could entice the Celtics, but Boston will likely ask for draft picks to speed up their rebuilding.
The Detroit Pistons, who are expected to be one of the most active teams before the deadline, are also viewed as a potential landing spot for Rondo.
The Pistons could make Josh Smith, Brandon Jennings, and Greg Monroe available, but it remains to be seen whether or not the Celtics would be willing to take the fresh contracts of Jennings or Smith, who both signed lucrative deals with the Pistons last summer.
The Sacramento Kings made several big moves this season, and sources said that GM Pete D'Alessandro and coach Mike Malone are trying to rebuild their team quickly. The Kings have a lot to offer such as future picks and young assets that could make a potential Rondo trade workable.
Rondo, who averaged 7.0 points to go along with 4.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds in his first two games this season, is expected to be one of the hottest subjects of trade rumors in the coming weeks until the Feb. 20 trade deadline.
