iOS vs. Android Market Share 2013: Apple Inc.'s iPhone 5 Gives T-Mobile Mixed Results in Carrier Distribution Sales
New data has shown the operating system market share gap between Apple and Google is on the decrease in the U.S.
According to Kantar Worldpanel, Apple's iOS increased 3.5 percent during the three months ending in May 2013 while Android only increased by 0.1 percent.

Overall, Android leads with 52 percent while iOS maintained second place with 41.9 percent.
Market share movements have also made little movements among the major U.S. mobile carriers.
Verizon Wireless continues to lead the carrier distribution market share with 34.6 percent while AT&T lands second with 29 percent. Sprint finished in third place with 12.7 percent. T-Mobile, however, saw a decrease in their sales despite the launch of Apple's iPhone 5.
T-Mobile, which is the fourth-largest U.S. carrier and the fourth service to add the iPhone to its brand, finished fourth as well with 10.1 percent. T-Mobile's percentage is down 3.4 percent in comparison to the three-month period ending in May 2012.
"The highly anticipated release of the iPhone on T-Mobile has benefited iOS in the latest 3 month period, though it has not yet impacted T-Mobile's share in the market," said Kantar Worldpanel ComTech's Global Consumer Insight Director Dominic Sunnebo.
However, the iPhone 5 was the best-selling smartphone with T-Mobile, during the three months ending in May 2013, with 31 percent of sales.
"iOS' strength on T-Mobile appears to be the ability to attract first time smartphone buyers, upgrading from a feature phone," Sunnebo added. "Of T-Mobile consumers who bought an iOS device since it launched on the carrier, 53 [percent] had previously owned a feature phone, well above the market average of 45 [percent] of iOS owners who previously owned a feature phone."
According to Sunnebo, 28 percent of T-Mobile customers who were surveyed for the data stated they plan to upgrade to an iPhone in the future.
