Hot Valentine's Day Food Recipes, Literally: Spiciest Dishes from Latin America

Latin America is known for their spicy dishes that have distinct flavors and spices. And as Valentine's Day is quickly approaching, what better way to celebrate than to serve your partner with a hot meal the Latin way. 

Roasted Cauliflower with Red Chile, Cilantro, and Lime

This meal is full of flavor that will give your partner just the right amount of "heat." The cauliflower should be slow cooked at 325 F to absorb the distinct flavor of chile and to give the dish an appetizing "golden color."

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cauliflower Head
  • 3 Cloves Minced Garlic
  • 1 TBS Red New Mexico or Ancho Chile Powder
  • ½ TSP Dried Pressed Red Chile
  • 1 TSP Toasted and Ground Cumin Seeds
  • ½ Cup Chopped Cilantro Leaves
  • ½ Lime Juice
  • 4 TBS Olive Oil
  • Salt to Taste

Procedure:

  • Preheat Oven to 325 F
  • Remove Florets from Cauliflower
  • Mix Florets in a Bowl with Garlic, Chile Powder, Pressed Chile, Cumin, Salt, and Olive Oil
  • Spread and Seasoned with Salt in an Empty Roasting Pan
  • Cook for about 1 to ½ Hours or Until Tender, Occasionally Stir
  • When Cooked, Put some Lime Juice, Serve with Cilantro Leaves and Enjoy!

Trinidad Stewed Chicken

This juicy "golden brown" chicken can be served with anything. The chicken is tenderly simmered with a spicy coconut sauce. It has the right amount of pepper to meet all of your spicy needs.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Whole Chicken, Cut
  • 3 TBS Chopped Green Onion
  • 3 TBS Chopped Fresh Cilantro
  • 1 TSP Minced Garlic
  • 1 TSP Chopped Onion
  • ½ Cup Coconut Milk
  • 1 TSP Red Pepper Flakes
  • 2 TBS Ketchup
  • 1 TSP Salt
  • ½ TSP Ground Black Pepper
  • 1 TBS Vegetable Oil
  • ¼ Cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 TBS Butter
  • 1 Cup Water

Procedure:

  • Marinate Chicken with Green Onion, Cilantro, Garlic, Onion, Salt and Pepper for 30 Minutes.
  • Heat the Vegetable Oil in a Deep Pot on Medium Heat with Sugar until Melted and Golden Brown.
  • Stir in Chicken Pieces, Cover and let cook for Two Minutes.
  • Pour Water, Coconut Milk, Pepper Flakes, Cook for 10 Minutes.
  • Put in Ketchup and Butter, Cook until Chicken is Tender for 20 to 30 Minutes.
  • Season with Salt and Pepper and Serve!

Mexican Tinga

This is an authentic Mexican meal with shredded chicken and onions simmered with thick and spicy chipotle sauce served in crunchy tostada shells. This is the easiest dish that can be enjoyed as an appetizer or snack.

Ingredients:

  • 2 Pounds Cooked Shredded Chicken Meat
  • 1 Large Onion, Cut into Rings
  • 1 (15 Ounce) Can Stewed Tomatoes
  • 1 (7 Ounce) Can Chipotle Peppers in Adobo Sauce
  • ½ Cup Sour Cream
  • 2 TBS Olive Oil
  • 16 Tostada Shells

 Procedure:

  • Heat Olive Oil in a Saucepan on Medium Heat with Onions. Cook for 5 Minutes until Soft.
  • Puree Tomatoes with Chipotle Peppers and Adobo Sauce. Put into the Onions
  • Add Chicken, Cook for 20 Minutes
  • Put onto Tostada Shells. Add a dash of Sour Cream. Serve and Enjoy!
