How ‘Jason Bourne’ Differs from the First Four Installments, According to Lead Matt Damon
Matt Damon will be back in his role as the super spy Jason Bourne for the first time since 2007. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor teased what's coming for the upcoming fifth installment of the franchise, and how "Jason Bourne" differs from its predecessors.
According to the 45-year-old star, the fifth "Bourne" movie will be attuned to the issues currently taking place today.
"Since 2007, so much has changed," Damon said, as quoted by the news outlet. "There's been the financial collapse, the great recession, all these issues of cyber warfare and civil liberties - things that are slowly coming to into the zeitgeist as we start to grapple with what the future is going to look like. And so those are kind of somewhere in the stew of our story. If you look at the first three, they are films that are product of the Bush presidency. Thematically, they touch on things people were talking and thinking about during that presidency. This one feels like a movie about today."
Jason Bourne's story began in 2002's "The Bourne Identity" and continued on in 2004's "The Bourne Supremacy" and 2007's "The Bourne Ultimatum." 2012's "The Bourne Legacy," however, didn't feature nor Bourne and Damon, and instead starred Jeremy Renner as black ops agent Aaron Cross.
According to Damon, "Jason Bourne" will begin with the titular character in a state that's "dark and unresolved," Entertainment Weekly reported. He may have gotten his memory back, but that doesn't mean that he knows everything there is to know about his past.
"This is the completion of this journey that started in the 'Bourne Identity,'" he told the news outlet. "It's part of the first three [movies], it's not a whole new chapter. It feels like the conclusion, even though we're not saying it's the conclusion, it feels like the conclusion of my identity journey. It goes deeper than 'Ultimatum,' basically."
Filming for "Jason Bourne" took place in Washington, D.C., Greece, London, Madrid, and New York, Entertainment Weekly added. Check out the movie's official poster here.
Julia Stiles will be reprising her role as Bourne's ally Nicky Parsons in the upcoming film, which was directed by Doug Liman, Variety reported. Newcomers include Alicia Vikander as a cyber warfare specialist, Vincent Cassel, and Tommy Lee Jones.
Frank Marshall is producing the flick along with Jeffrey Weiner for Captivate Entertainment. Also serving as producers are Greengrass, Damon, Ben Smith, and Greg Goodman, with Christopher Rouse and Henry Morrison as executive producers, the news outlet listed.
"Jason Bourne" bows in theaters on July 29. Watch the first teaser below.
