'Orange is the New Black' Season 4: What to Know about the Show's Latin Actors
"Orange is the New Black" is one of the biggest shows on Netflix despite its unconventional story. After all, how typical can a women's prison story be?
But while the OITNB cast is now big television stars in their own right, there is little that we know about them -- especially the Latinos populating the show. Here are some interesting facts about them:
Dascha Polanco (Daya) -- She's pretty smart, with a BA in Psychology from Hunter College. On a sour note, though, she may not be using it too well. The Daily Mail noted she appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court in December as she faced four counts of assault and harassment for allegedly attacking a 17-year-old girl.
Berto Colon (Cesar) -- This Puerto Rican actor also happens to be the voice of Manny Escuela in "Grand Theft Auto IV." Fox News Latino noted that he moved from Puerto Rico to the US as a teenager, so he doesn't really relate to his OITNB character's life. However, to bring Cesar to life, he takes from his own experiences, as well as those he knows, who are in the same situation as his character.
Selenis Leyva (Gloria) -- Raised in Cuba, Selenis is very passionate about the rights of the LGBT population because it hits close to home and to her heart. Her sister, Marizol, is transgendered. While she is known for her role in OITNB, she also appeared in several other TV shows, including "Law & Order," "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "Third Watch," "The Sopranos," "The Good Wife," "Girls," and "Elementary."
Jackie Cruz (Marisol) -- She loves music on the show, but she's also a musician in real life. In fact, she is associated with the Black Eyed Peas member will.i.am, who produces her with a girl group called Krush Velvet. Unfortunately, they didn't quite sign on to a record label. She did debut an extended play called "Hollywood Gypsy" in 2010, though.
Diane Guerrero (Maritza) -- Her family is Colombian, but Diane Guerrero was already born and raised in the US. Being born in the US, she was the only one who was able to remain in the country when the rest of her family was deported back to Colombia when she was 14. Still, that did not deter her from reaching for her dreams. Other than OITNB, she appeared in several films and a few other television shows, including "Blue Bloods" and "Jane the Virgin."
