Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Confirmed, New Features Announced [Release Date & Rumors]

By Maria Myka| Feb 03, 2016

Samsung fans know that by February, the company shows off their lineup for the upcoming year. It seems that this time, they'll be looking into "The Next Galaxy."

According to Droid-Life, two devices are expected to be presented: the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge, which is just another version of the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus.

The news was confirmed by Samsung itself, as they had the listing of their Edge devices on their developer site's SDK section. The outlet noted that the website mentioned the S7 Edge next to the S6 Edge and S6 Edge Plus. It was also marked at the lower part of the page than the S7 Edge, which will have an "M OS" -- this can only be assumed as a reference to the Android Marshmallow.

So what else do we know about the upcoming gadget from the company?

Forbes noted that the Galaxy S7 Edge has been upgraded in its functionality and now has a "wide type." As the name indicated, the Wide Type pannel allows for a wider range of functionality, including a compass, phone status, and news widgets.

Combining the practicality of the Galaxy S5 and the build quality of the S6, here are the new features to look forward to on the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge:

If a video from CNet proves true, the new model looks strikingly similar to Apple's iPhone 6 but with a catch: both of the models will come with larger batteries that could put Apple's gadgets to shame. Venture Beat explained that the battery packs are addressed to the criticism of Apple's batteries, as the iPhone only checks in at 1715 mAH and 2750mAh, while the Galaxy S7 models come with massive 3200 mAh and 3600 mAh batteries.

Then there's also the return of the MicroSD slot. Samsung is said to support their expandable storage up to 200GB. The Android 6.0 Marshmallow allows for the merge of external and internal storage, which means that it's going to give Apple another brush-off, especially if the Cupertino-based company decides on starting with the controversial 16GB entry for their iPhone 7.

As for the other features, BGR noted that the S7 models will come with a 4GB RAM, 32GB base storage, a Snapdragon 820 Qualcom processor, and a 1440 x 2560 HD display. There has been no confirmation on the camera, however, there have been rumors that the models will come equipped with 20-megapixel lenses.

While news of the announcement is already set for February, there has been no confirmation yet on when the phones will be released, although that information may be given at the event.

What do you think of these specs so far?
