Colombian Band Monsieur Periné’s Newfound Recognition May Result to a Grammy Win?

Winning the 2015 Latin Grammy award for Best New Artist has opened doors for Colombian alternative band Monsieur Periné. With the group's newfound recognition, a potential Grammy win is not unlikely in the near future.

The band, composed of Santiago Sarabia, singer Catalina García, and guitarist Nicolás Junca, has held performances in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. for the month of January, NBC News wrote. They also played at the National Public Radio, where they recorded a live session.

"This award helps lay the foundation of our future and has helped us gain confidence in what we do. It also rewards several years of work," Sarabia said of their Latin Grammy award, as quoted by the news outlet.

The three indie artists bagged a gold record in Colombia for their first album titled "Hecho a Mano" or "Handmade," according to NBC News. Their second record, "Caja de Música," or "Music Box," was nominated for a Latin Grammy in the Album of the Year category last year. Both albums were produced independently, with "Caja de Música" licensed to Sony Music for two years.

For the second record, the band sought the help of award-winning producer Eduardo Cabra of Calle 13 and recorded for a month in San Juan, Puerto Rico, NBC News noted. Monsieur Periné also collaborated with two of the members of legendary Latin rock/Mexican band Café Tacvba in their song, "Cempasuchil." They worked with Dominican singer-songwriter Vicente García in "Nuestra Canción" as well, the track that opens the group's second album.

Monsieur Periné, which was formed in 2007, described their music as "suín a la colombiana" or swing Colombian style, NBC News added. There are also inspirations of the minor swing style of French guitarist Jean "Django" Reinhardt, jazz, and Latin American rhythms.

"The Grammy nod is already a win for us," Sarabia shared, as reported by the news outlet. "It would be something historic for us and for Colombian bands, for our country's industry. Very few Colombian artists are nominated to the Grammy's and very few win. It would be incredible at least that a Colombian won. If it's us, it would be perfect, it would open even more doors, especially doors in the U.S., which is what we came to do on this tour."

This year, the group is nominated for a Grammy for Best Latin Rock, Urban, or Alternative Album alongside big names in the music industry, such as Pitbull, Natalia Lafourcade, and Bomba Estéreo, another Colombian band, NBC News listed. The awards ceremony will be held in Los Angeles on Feb. 15.
