Danny Garcia Victory Carves Highly-Anticipated Rematch with Amir Khan
Danny Garcia's thrashing of Robert Guerrero over the weekend has now started talks of a potential Garcia-Khan rematch.
The 27-year old Puerto Rican-American bagged Floyd Mayweather Jr's vacated WBC welterweight champion belt Saturday night by scoring a unanimous-decision victory over the 32-year old California slugger. The match was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Boxing analysts have pegged Amir Khan as the mandatory challenger for Garcia's new belt. However, Angel Garcia has asserted that his son has already defeated Khan, and would much rather seek a different opponent, as per Boxing News 24 via Boxing The Gloves.
"It is between the WBC and Al Haymon and the managing team," said the older Garcia. "To me, not saying anything bad about Khan but I don't even want that. There are bigger things in life. Old things out, new things in."
Meanwhile, the younger Garcia did not specifically name who he wants to fight next, but he did say he only wants to fight the best of the bests, ESPN reported.
"I want to fight the best. Danny Garcia never ducked anybody," said the undefeated Garcia. "I showed I can stand toe-to-toe with a great veteran and win the fight."
It was Garcia who started sluggish in Saturday's night affair. Guerrero dominated the first few rounds, but the aggression soon turned into crippling fatigue. Garcia was quick to pick up steam and easily took advantage of the situation. In the later rounds, the man known as "The Ghost," was reduced to a walking punching back, devoid of adequate head movement and defense.
Garcia told media members after the fight that he was confident he had won at least eight rounds. He added that Guerrero came prepared, but it was he who executed his game plan more effectively.
"Guerrero is tough. No one has ever stopped him. He came to fight, he was in shape. I'm taking nothing away from him," said Garcia. "I was throwing my combinations, using my legs like my dad told me to do. I knew he was going to come to fight. He's a rugged warrior."
As for Khan, the 29-year old British boxer confirmed last week that he wishes to fight whoever wins the Garcia-Guerrero bout, but he particularly prefers facing Danny Garcia, who beat him in the fourth round back in 2012. You can click here to read more about what Khan had to say.
Boxing News 24 claimed that the only way Garcia won't be able to fight Khan next is if promoters decide to let him fight in at least one voluntary title defense before squaring off with Khan.
