Johnny Depp to Star in Thriller 'Triple Frontier' About a the Notorious Drug Smuggline World in South America
Johnny Depp is in early talks to play another mobster in a thriller film. It will be set in South America, and is called "Triple Frontier."
Variety noted that Depp, who recently got a SAG nomination for his role in "Black Mass," has yet to commit to the project. However, he initially showed interest in the script, which involves Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal (Zero Dark Thirty) as the scriptwriters, and JC Chandor (A Most Violent Year) as the director. Charles Roven and Alex Gartner from Atlas Entertainment are attached as producers as well.
The film is set in the border zone between Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil. They are among the most notorious countries for their organized crime. As IGN noted, the three borders make the area very difficult for the police to monitor, making it the perfect place for thriving criminal organizations.
Even though Johnny Depp is in talks for the role, the film also put out offers to Tom Hanks and Will Smith. The latter had to decline due to a scheduling conflict with his next film, "Collateral Beauty."
"Triple Frontier" has been in the backroom for a while. Collider reported that the project was first announced back in 2009. However, the project fell off the radar due to budgeting and casting issues. It wasn't until recently that negotiations were put back on the table.
This won't be Depp's first dabble in organized crime/mob films. In 2001, he played George Jung in "Blow." He earned a SAG nomination for his role as Whitey Bulger in "Black Mass," and paired that with a Razzie nomination for his portrayal in "Mortdecai."
Coming Soon noted that Depp will be seen in Kevin Smith's Sundance film "Yoga Hosers" this year as well as the Tim Burton sequel, "Alice Through The Looking Glass." He also recently finished filming the latest installment of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series, called "Dead Men Tell No Tales."
There has been no word yet as to when production will begin or when the film will premiere in theaters. However, with casting negotiations beginning, it is expected that the project will move on soon.
What do you think of Johnny Depp as a gangster in South America? Do you think it will be more similar to his performance in "Black Mass" or is it a coin toss with his performance from "Mortdecai?"
