Juan Manuel Marquez To Face Marcos Maidana Or Shawn Porter If Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley Rematch Is Sealed
Juan Manuel Marquez made it no secret that he wants to avenge his loss to Timothy Bradley. But if the undefeated Bradley ends up facing Manny Pacquiao on April 12, the Mexican boxing icon is ready to consider other options.
BoxingScene reported that Marquez, who is looking to win a fifth title in different divisions, will likely target newly-crowned WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana or IBF welterweight ruler Shawn Porter.
Among the two possible opponents, the title showdown with the 26-year-old Porter is more likely to happen than a fight against Maidana since the Argentine will likely have a rematch with Adrien Broner on April 19 or 26 in San Antonio or California.
"My career is all about challenges. Right now the challenge is to get a fifth title," Marquez said in a BoxingScene interview. "And if cannot get a [fight for] the title under the World Boxing Organization (WBO), there are others. I have to see the possibilities and if the opportunity opens - why not go get it. There is the International Boxing Federation (IBF), World Boxing Association (WBA), and the World Boxing Council (WBC)."
Marquez previously said that he will have two more fights this year before hanging up his gloves.
The 40-year-old Mexican insisted that his first goal is to have a rematch with Bradley. But with the Pacquiao-Bradley rematch looming for April, Marquez expressed desire in facing another champion before squaring off with Bradley again.
Aside from Maidana and Porter, previous reports suggested that Marquez could end up facing WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov or American brawler Mike Alvarado, but the Mexico City native sees no benefit in facing either fighter.
"Neither Alvarado nor Provodnikov are in my plans. I'm going forward. They are great fighters, and I'm not putting them down, but I gain nothing by fighting with them. If I beat Provodnikov I win a title that was already mine and Alvarado is not a champion. I have nothing to prove. I want a fifth world title and that's my goal," Marquez reiterated.
Marquez, who is best known for his epic showdowns with Pacquiao, also expressed no interest in facing his Filipino nemesis again after scoring a sixth-round knockout win in their fourth showdown in December 2012.
