NBA Trade Rumors 2014 Update: New York Knicks Shopping J.R. Smith After Getting Fined $50,000 for Shoelace Stunt on Shawn Marion [Video]
The New York Knicks are slowly losing their patience, reports suggest the team is actively shopping troubled shooting guard J.R. Smith.
ESPN reported that Knicks executives have already reached their boiling point after Smith got into more trouble recently when the streak-shooting guard was fined $50,000 for recurring instances of unsportsmanlike conduct.
"Sources close to the situation said Wednesday that the organization has become increasingly frustrated with Smith's on- and off-the-court transgressions and may feel that a fresh start would be best for all parties," ESPN noted.
The suspension was fueled by video reviews showing Smith untying shoes of opponents, stunts deemed by the league as dangerous to the player involved. See video below:
Knicks head coach Mike Woodson, who had his fair share of heated arguments with the 28-year-old guard, did not confirm nor deny whether the Knicks are looking to trade Smith, but the veteran coach said that Smith's conduct was unacceptable.
"I'm not happy about this, because he was warned, he comes back and he makes the same mistake, and it's not right," Woodson said. "It's just got to stop. I keep saying this every time something pops up, but it's got to stop."
Woodson, who has shown patience with Smith's on and off court behavior in the past, said that he is planning to talk to the 10-year veteran, adding that Smith has been unprofessional in dealing with issues surrounding him.
While the Knicks are reportedly willing to part ways with Smith, it is widely believed that New York will find it hard to trade him.
Aside from his erratic behavior, Smith just signed a three-year-deal worth $18 million during the offseason. Smith also underwent arthroscopic knee surgery after securing a contract last summer, which forced him to miss training camp. Reports also suggest that Smith is currently dealing with knee soreness.
"Good luck with that," said one rival executive in a CBS Sports interview when asked about the Knicks' intention to trade Smith.
Smith, whose average is down to 11.3 points from 18.1 last season, was also suspended by the league in the Knicks' first five games this season for violating the NBA's drug policy. He was also handed $25,000 fine for sending a hostile tweet to Brandon Jennings after the Detroit Pistons guard questioned New York's decision to sign Smith's brother, Chris.
