Miss Universe 2015 Highlights: Host Announces Wrong Winner [Watch]
It was a dramatic win for Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach in the recently concluded Miss Universe 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sunday night.
For a moment, Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez savored wearing the precious crown after being announced the winner of the international beauty competition but her victory was short-lived.
Pageant host Steve Harvey cut Gutiérrez's moment to announce that he made a big mistake when announcing the winner. Harvery claimed that the winner written on the envelope handed to him was Miss Philippines, as per Las Vegas Sun.
In a Twitter video post, Wurtzbach, who was already crowned first runner up, was stunned with Harvey's admission and was at a lost with the announcement.
When she realized she was the real winner, Wurtzbach looked at Miss USA and 2nd runner up Olivia Jordan in disbelief before waving to the crowd and walking to the center of the stage next to Gutiérrez.
The crowd at the Axis in Planet Hollywood had mixed reactions. Colombia's supporters were certainly booing while Filipinos were cheering because of the win that ended the 42-year drought in the Miss Universe pageant.
"Listen folks, this is exactly what's on the card. I will take responsibility for this. It was my mistake. It was on the card. Horrible mistake but the right thing, I can show it to you right here. The first runner up is Colombia. It was my mistake. Still a great night. Please don't hold it against the ladies. Please don't. Thank you all," Harvey explained as he showed the envelope handed to him with the final results.
Then things got more awkward when Miss Universe 2014 Paulina Vega removed the crown from Miss Colombia's head and transferred it to Wurtzbach.
The pageant ended in tears, as per News.com.au, since Gutiérrez was clearly disappointed with the mix-up. She was seen being comforted by other contestants along with Miss Philippines.
It was not how Wurtzbach imagined winning the crown, but at the end of the day, she took home the Miss Universe 2015 title,\ besting 79 other contestants.
For her winning answer, the 26-year-old Filipina beauty said she wants to use her voice to influence the youth and raise awareness on certain issues like HIV if she wins the crown.
"I want to show the world, the universe rather that I am confidently beautiful with a heart," the Miss Universe 2015 winner said during the final Q&A round.
CNN Philippines said that Wurtzbach was an early favorite and was also the top candidate voted by people online.
