Seattle Seahawks' Russell Wilson Not Yet an Elite NFL Quarterback? Here's Why
Cleveland Browns coach Mike Pettine believes that Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson does not yet belong to the elite tier for his position.
An NFL.com report said that Pettine recently assessed Wilson's performance prior to his team's 13-30 loss to the Seahawks on Sunday night.
"Would you put him there with the guys that can transcend their supporting cast? The (Tom) Bradys, whether it's Aaron Rodgers, (Drew) Brees, (Ben) Roethlisberger, the ones that you would consider the two, three, four elite guys? No. But he's certainly played himself into that next tier," Pettine was quoted by the same report as saying.
But despite this statement, Pettine also recognised what Wilson can do. The coach claimed that the quarterback is a very productive player who helps his team win.
Asked for a reaction on Pettine's comments, Wilson said he does not worry about those kinds of assessments.
"I think it comes down to winning games. ... That's the only thing I care about," he added.
And Wilson did prove his worth on Sunday night after he made league history, making three touchdown passes and no interceptions for his fifth straight game, as per NBC Sports.
The same report detailed that he has already completed 19 touchdown passes for the last five games of his team.
This recent win and accomplishment may make Pettine think about his NFL quarterback rankings.
Perhaps, he should also consider how Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel views Wilson on the field.
Manziel said in a Cleveland.com report that he thinks Russel is "a top-tier guy."
"He has 19 touchdowns and no interceptions over the past five games. Find another guy around the league that's doing that. There's not many, I know that," added Manziel.
The two quarterbacks have been repeatedly compared with each other because of their size and the way they move on the field.
He claimed that he was able to meet and talk with Wilson after the game. The Browns quarterback added that his Seahawks counterpart told him he did a good job in the recent match.
"He said I'm getting better every time I get out there, and it's fun to watch. It was fun to watch him play as well, so it was cool to just catch up for a little bit. I wish him nothing but the best," Manziel added in the Cleveland.com report.
Wilson's teammates also had high praises for the quarterback after his great performance. Tight end Luke Willson said in a Seattle Times report that there are no words to describe how he "balled out of control."
For Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, Wilson was also able to do a feat that has not been seen from any player in the league.
