Sony Considering One Subscribition for All Sony Online Entertainment Games
Sony Online Entertainment Studio is considering a proposal that would allow users who wish to play their online subscription-based games to pay for just one subscription that would apply to every game on the studio's roster.
The studio, which is behind Planetside 2, Everquest Next, and DC Universe Online, is considering a move that would allow fans who wish to enjoy the benefits of a monthly subscription to pay one flat fee per month that would apply to all these games. The proposal was revealed in a Reddit by Sony Online Entertainment head John Smedley, who discussed the reasoning behind this likely change to Sony's subscription model:
"We are considering (and are likely going to move forward with) a plan that means if you subscribe to one of our games you are a subscriber to all our games (this applies to PC titles only by the way). All for the current $14.99 a month. That's a benefit most companies simply can't offer because they don't have our portfolio of games. The goal would be to let you pick an item in each game you play. Some of you might say 'well who cares..I only play Planetside 2. How is that a benefit to me?' My answer is simple - we've got a great lineup of games, some of which aren't announced yet that cater to a lot of players," wrote Smedley.
Smedley also hinted that, in addition to Everquest Next, there will soon be another another new game from the company "that PS2 players might just like" that will also fall under this proposed subscription model.
While this new model is certainly exciting, it looks as though the one subscription across the board plan will only be available on the PC in the near future. Smedley explained why PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 users may not receive this new system for premium subscriptions.
"We have a problem with a disparity between our console titles (which can't use Station Cash) and our PC Games. We can't do the same kind of promotions as easily on the PS3 and PS4. We're a lot more limited because we can't use Station Cash on there. So when we have a 3x sale on SC we have to do something different for our console titles. It's a pain in the neck to deal with this," Smedley said.
