MLB Trade Rumors 2014 Update: New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers Still Discussing Ike Davis Trade

The New York Mets announced that they expect Ike Davis to be with the team in their spring training, but that doesn't mean the first baseman has been removed from the trading block.

ESPN reported that the Mets are still looking to trade the first baseman and the notion that Davis will be available for the spring training is way different than assuring that he will be in their Opening Day roster for the 2014 MLB season.

Sources said that the Mets are still talking to the Milwaukee Brewers about a potential deal for the 26-year-old first baseman.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin, whose team has been relatively quiet in the free agency market this offseason, confirmed that he is talking to Mets GM Sandy Alderson, but they are still far from striking a trade that would benefit both teams.

"First base, I've had ongoing discussions with Sandy Alderson, but we haven't gotten to anything where we're comfortable with the deal from our side, and he's not been comfortable with the deal from his side," Melvin said in an interview with MLB.com.

Melvin and Anderson started discussing the potential Davis trade during the managers meetings in November, which was followed by several discussions before and after the winter meeting in December.

According to reports, the Mets asked for Tyler Thornburg, but the Brewers are not willing to part ways with the 25-year-old relief pitcher. When asked if he feels the Mets are asking for too much for Davis, Melvin did not give a clear answer, saying that all general managers just want the best for their respective teams.

"I don't ever get into that," Melvin said. "Everybody makes the deal that they feel is the best deal for them. I don't ever consider whether asking prices are too high on [trades] or not, because you don't know until after the deal and you've seen players perform. I think we've pretty well stood by -- the one thing we've done is we do not want to give up pitching."

Aside from the Brewers, the Mets also reportedly talked to the Baltimore Orioles and are looking to re-engage in talks with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Mets asked for Eduardo Rodriguez from Baltimore, but the Orioles expressed no interest in dealing the 20-year-old pitcher.
