Adele’s New Album Leaves T-Swift's Record in the Dust, Meet the New Queen of Pop
The hype continues for Adele's comeback album, "25," since it was released on Nov. 20. After four years, the songstress is making waves again and even hitting number one record sales.
According to BBC News, the 27-year-old star's "make up" LP has already reached a record-breaking 3.38 million copies sold in just one week in U.S. alone, as reported by Nielson Music Data. In fact, it had the largest single sales week since Nielsen started in 1991.
In the singer's own country, Britain, the album also broke records by hitting the highest number of albums sold at 800,000 copies in one week, as monitored by the U.K. chart. It even exceeded the sales of the next 86 albums in the list combined, breaking the previous 18-year record of Oasis' "Be Here Now."
The English rock band fronted by Liam and Noel Gallagher sold about 696,000 copies of their third album on its launch in August of 1997. Moreover, Adele's album also surpassed another record breaking album, which was Taylor Swift's "1989," which sold 1.8 million copies in the U.S.
Adele has now taken the pop princess' throne by making "25" the biggest selling album of 2015. Independent added that the record, which had the number one hit single "Hello," had the biggest first-day sales with over 300,000 copies in just 24 hours.
It, too, is the U.K.'s most downloadable album in history, having sold 252,423 digital copies, a number that was previously held by Ed Sheeran's second studio album, "X," which went up to 95,709 copies in summer 2014.
As a result, the success of "25" has been awarded a double platinum certification from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). It even exceeded the success of her first two albums, "19" and "21."
"19," with songs like "Chasing Pavements" and "Make You Feel My Love," had 73,000 first week sales on its released in Feb. 2008. On the other hand, "21," which included the number one hits, "Rolling In The Deep," "Rumor Has It," and "Someone Like You," sold 208,000 copies in its first week in Jan. 2011.
"The massive impact of '25' this week marks the moment that Adele has transformed herself from a phenomenon of our age to an all-time great," Martin Talbot, from Official Charts Company, said. "The statistics surrounding the album are staggering, topped by the simple fact that no album has ever sold 800,000 copies to reach Number One in the history of British music."
