Golden Globes 2014 Predictions: Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries or TV Movie [Poll]
Five supporting actresses are nominated for a Golden Globe for their scene-stealing performances in a series, miniseries or TV movie. Although these actresses did not play lead roles, their impressive performances often outshone their leading lady counterparts.
The nominees for the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries or TV Movie are:
Jacqueline Bisset, "Dancing on the Edge"- Bisset, one of the biggest stars of the 1970s, plays Lady Lavinia Cremone, a wealthy recluse. Lavinia is the patron of the Louis Lester Band, a fictional multiracial jazz ensemble from America that becomes a huge hit in 1930s England. Bisset is excellent as the regal, guarded Lavinia. Although Bisset's Lavinia seems icy and distant, her sad past and latent feelings eventually come to the surface.
Janet McTeer, "The White Queen"- McTeer is captivating as Jacquetta Woodville, the mother of "The White Queen," Elizabeth Woodville. She is her daughter's main confidant, guiding her through the War of the Roses between the Lancasters and the Yorks. She is able to thrive as both a Lancaster and a York, and even evades a charge of witchcraft, which usually lead to death. McTeer is excellent as the strong, mystical character who knows how to achieve power and success.
Hayden Panettiere, "Nashville"- Panettiere plays Juliette Barnes, a young country singer who knows how to get what she wants. She is unabashed about her frequent trysts, and ruthless about staying at the top of the country charts. Panettiere is fantastic at playing Juliette's tough, hardened exterior, but often lets viewers catch a glimpse into Juliette's fears and vulnerabilities.
Monica Potter, "Parenthood"- Potter is excellent as Kristina Braverman on the critically acclaimed but under-veiwed NBC drama. Potter made viewers weep with her outstanding portrayal of Kristina's battle with breast cancer last season. Potter's Kristina is fragile yet strong, and gave a subtle performance that made viewers go through multiple boxes of Kleenex.
Sofia Vergara, "Modern Family"- Vergara's Gloria Pritchett is a Colombian bombshell and trophy wife of Jay Pritchett, a wealthy and hard-edged entrepreneur. However, Vergara's Gloria is a lot more than a pretty face--she proves that she is a fiercely protective mother and unafraid to speak her mind. Vergara is hysterical as Gloria, and often yells, comically mispronounces words and becomes embroiled in hilarious misunderstandings.
Prediction: Monica Potter, "Parenthood"
Potter, who was snubbed for the Emmy, may take the trophy this time for her portrayal of Kristina Braverman. While Potter has put on a consistently wonderful performance as the dependable mother, her portrayal of her character's harrowing battle with cancer was especially moving. Potter deserves the Golden Globe for her realistic, affecting performance.
