Android Flip Phone By Samsung As Powerful as the Galaxy S6?: Specs, Features & Price [Rumors]
Flip phones were once thought to be a thing of the past. Now it seems that South Korean giant, Samsung is bringing back the age of the flip phone, which is rumored to be as powerful as its flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S6.
If rumors are to be believed, Samsung's upcoming phone called SM-W2016 is a throwback to the clamshell phones of the 90s era to the early 2000s, reports HNGN. The clamshell design phone was most recently seen in Adele's latest music video, "Hello". There are already rumors surrounding Samsung's throwback project.
Though the phone will have a clamshell design, the specs certainly are not archaic. The phone will reportedly run Android 5.1.1 Lollipop and will be equipped with a 64-bit octa-core processor, as well as 3 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of internal storage. The phone will reportedly feature a touchscreen.
The SM-W2016 will reportedly boast of flagship features, said that to rival that of the Samsung Galaxy S6 with a powerful main camera of 16MP as well as a front-facing 5 MP camera for selfies, according to a report with The Daily Mail.
Based on the images released online, the phone appears to be similar to that of the Motorola Razr series, which was one of the more popular and iconic phones that defined the early 2000s. Samsung has not revealed a release date for the phone or have confirmed any rumors.
Samsung is not the only brand to embrace the retro looking phone. Another South Korean giant, LG has also released a smartphone called the LG Wine Smart that also runs on Android Lollipop and has the clamshell design.
The LG Wine Smart was created by LG so that fans of the flip phone might also have a smartphone that they can enjoy. In recent years, modern technology has also embraced retro technology. In fact, Polaroid as well as Lomography cameras have made a comeback and have become increasingly popular to a certain market.
Celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Anna Wintour, Rihanna and Kate Beckinsale also seem to favor 'retro technology' having been seen using flip phones and Polaroid cameras on numerous occasions.
Should the rumors be believed, the SM-W2016 will be popular among those who prefer using a physical keyboard as opposed to a touch screen phone. With the release of the SM-W2016, more clamshell type phones might be making their way to the market soon.
