'The Vampire Diaries' Season 7 Updates: Showrunner Reveals Why Caroline Would Never Want to See Stefan Ever Again

"The Vampire Diaries" Season 7 showrunner Caroline Dries revealed the most "legit" reason why "Steroline" would be breaking up as the show is working its way through the season.

In an interview, Dries explained to TV Line how Caroline Forbes, played by Candice Accola, would have a future without her friend-turned-lover Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley).

The show's season 7, second episode carried what the outlet described as a "soul-crushing reveal": Caroline is happily engaged but not with Stefan.

"If he calls back, tell him I'm not here. And I never want to hear the name 'Stefan Salvatore' ever again. Got it?" the Dallas-based TV news producer Caroline barked to her assistant Tony.

The TV series then proceeds to the juicy part about Stefan's past: Valerie, the first ever heretic.

Apparently, Valerie was Stefan's first love who carried his child after a quick but devastating affair.

Caroline was a bit shook after learning about Stefan's first love but was won over by his smooth words.

Unfortunately for "Steroline" fans, the couple would still be splitting in the future, something "Vampire Diaries" executive producer Caroline Dries consider this an essential part of the characters' growth.

During her talk with TV Line, Dries explained what is coming to the Steroline love story.

"Valerie is part of the reason, but it's a much bigger, more emotional, legit reason. It's beyond petty jealousy or Stefan cheating on Caroline or anything like that," she told the outlet, adding that the seventh year of "The Vampire Diaries" is the season when the characters "growing up and becoming adults."

She further explained that the Stefan-Valerie-Caroline drama would continue with the male vampire pondering more on his almost-baby with the heretic.

"He'll keep thinking, 'I could have been a dad.' We had many ideas [for their backstory], but we felt this was the most symbolic and thematic," she added.

Back in July, Accola expressed her excitement at the progress the "Steroline" love team has made.

"I feel like six seasons is a nice, long slow-burn. I'm excited to see these characters together. Usually, it's so immediate, especially on our series ... in real life, it's the person you can be yourself in front of in the most dorky way," the actress told the Digital Spy.

"I think that both of these characters have seen the worst in each other, and they still like each other. And I think that's really cool and that's really special," she added.
