Media Snubs Chicago Shooting, 1 Death Confirmed: Neighborhood Claims Drug Dealers Actually Prevented Violence in Block
One person died and 22 were wounded in a recent shooting in Chicago on Halloween weekend. In a report by NBC Chicago, a 55-year-old man was shot to death inside a business in the Gage Park neighborhood, one of at least 22 other individuals victimized by shootings across the Windy City over the weekend.
Among the injured victims are two 15-year-olds, a boy and a girl who were injured in separate instances early Saturday morning.
Not a lot of information has been dissipated by the media concerning the shootings, as Allen West noted that after all, this was an area that used to be known for a $3 million drug operation. After the number of shooting instances in Chicago over the weekend, Chicago Tribune noted that residents in the area agreed that "the neighborhood was better when the drug dealers were around."
Mariah Monae, a 16-year-old living in the neighborhood said, "When the drug dealers had left, that's when everything started getting worse on this block. But when they were here, they were protecting us. They ain't let none of that shooting stuff happen." She also shared how the drug dealers were breaking up big groups of people who are fighting, as violence was said to be bad for their business.
The girl also shared, "When they left, that's when everything started acting up. People come up here shooting for no apparent reason. People probably scared to walk through here now. I am."
Allen West noted that so far, 401 people have been shot or killed in Chicago alone, which raises questions as to why the media has been snubbing such high numbers. As the outlet noted, outrage for this kind of crime should be equal, if not more than the anger for mass shooting deaths that have been plaguing news media outlets for a long time, noting that 401 people killed individually over the course of a time matters as much.
Among the citywide shootings that started on Friday evening include a 38-year-old man shot in Little Village on the West Side, a 62-year-old man shot on his back the South Side and a 31-year-old man shot during a domestic dispute in Morgan Park.
The list didn't end there and so far, 22 have already been reported with injuries, although it cannot be said whether or not it is the last of the rising numbers.
However, a list of the victims on Halloween weekend can be seen here do you believe that somehow, drug rings are keeping the peace in Chicago or is that a ludicrous notion?
