Miguel Releases New Song 'U R On My Mind', Reportedly Recorded When Singer Was Just 14 [Listen]

Miguel recently released a new song called "U R On My Mind."

The R&B singer said that the track, which was unveiled on Spotify and also features LA rapper Blu, was recorded in 1999 when he was just 14 years old, SPIN reported. Anthony Williams produced the song.

Miguel, who is of Mexican descent and whose real name is Miguel Jontel Pimentel, released his third album via RCA Records, "Wildheart," last June. The record featured collaborations with Lenny Kravitz and Kurupt, Hiphop DX wrote. Miguel also worked with German photographer Daniel Sannwald for the album's artwork, which was inspired by LSD.

"This time it was like I finally want to have an identity as a tastemaker, as someone who's ahead of the curve, someone who's intellectual, someone who's striving to push the boundaries, someone who's ever-growing and evolving, someone who's open-minded," the 30-year-old recording artist said of "Wildheart" in an interview with Rolling Stone.

The album, which Miguel started working on in Jan. 2014, was described by the singer as "an ode to love of self...  [and] the ongoing infatuation with whatever you're f***ing into," Rolling Stone reported. "Wildheart" serves as the follow-up to 2012's "Kaleidoscope Dream."

Early reviews of his latest album often compared Miguel to Prince. He takes the comparison as a compliment, but he hopes that someday he will "solidify" himself with his own identity, NEWS.com.au reported. Miguel won a Grammy Award for his song "Adorn" from "Kaleidoscope Dream."

"When Prince was on his way to becoming iconic people compared him to James Brown and Rick James. But there comes a certain point when you're consistently doing your thing and people eventually drop those comparisons. I'm hoping to get there. I intend on getting there," he explained, as quoted by the news outlet.

"Leaves," one of the songs from "Wildheart," has a close resemblance with Smashing Pumpkins' 1996 hit "1979." Miguel said that the guitar riff came to him "in such a subconscious way" and that the song "literally wrote itself in minutes," but he realized the two songs' similarity prior to the track's release, NEWS.com.au added.

Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan was contacted, who then approved the use of the song and got a co-writing credit in "Leaves," NEWS.com.au noted.

"Towards the end of the song when the drum programming kicks in it's even more reminiscent (of '1979'), you realize it in a more straight-on way. It's cool they were cool about everything. It's all about respect. We're all standing on the shoulders of giants at this point," Miguel said, as reported by NEWS.com.au.
