Expect a similar version of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and cancer-battling medication Daraprim to be available in stores for only $1 as a pharmaceutical company expressed intention to offer a similar drug for the extremely low price.

According to SFGate, the San-Diego based Imprimis Pharmaceuticals Inc. has announced on Thursday that it will produce compounded capsules with Daraprim ingredients like pyrimethamine and leucovorin for only $99 for a bottle containing 100 capsules. The current price of the pill is said to be around $750 per piece.

Imprimis CEO Mark Baum said in an announcement on the company website that the prices of this drug have soared recently and has concerned a lot of people who need the medication.

It was noted in an Occupy Democrats report that Turing Pharmaceuticals raised the price of Daraprim "by more than 5,000 percent" after it purchased rights for the drug.

Aside from this medicine, Baum said they are also planning to make cheap versions of other drugs that have become very expensive.

"We are looking at all of these cases where the sole-source generic companies are jacking the price way up. There'll be many more of these," explained Baum in the SFGate report.

He added that they will offer the compounded alternatives of the drug "to several sole source legacy generic drugs."

Imprimis Cares and its team of compounding pharmacists will work with physicians and their patients to ensure they have affordable access to the medicines they need from the over 7,800 generic FDA-approved drugs," added Baum on the Imprimis website.

The company is also working on collaborating with health insurers and prescription benefit managers to make these cheap drugs available to a lot of people.

"We're geared up. We're ready to go as soon as the orders come in," he added.

Meanwhile, Ars Technica explained that this pill is "not exactly the same" as Daraprim but is said to be close to the makeup of the drug.

The drug is considered to be a preventive drug for toxoplasmosis in HIV-positive patients, as per AidsMap.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) causes AIDS, a condition which weakens a person's ability to fight infections.

"It is contracted through unprotected sex or needle sharing. An HIV test confirms diagnosis. Medications may suppress the virus and delay the onset of AIDS," added WebMD.

The health website noted that some HIV/AIDS symptoms include headache, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, fatigue, aching muscles, sore throat, red rash that doesn't itch and fever.

Those who are exposed to the virus or have a high risk of getting it usually take HIV protection drugs taken "within 72 hours of initial exposure."
