Gabriel Iglesias to Star & Write Comedy Series Based on His Life for ABC
Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias is set to write and star in a multi-camera comedy for ABC.
"The Fluffy Shop" (working title) will be produced by ABC Studios, with Iglesias writing the co-pilot alongside Jay Lavender and Tim Doyle, who will also serve as the showrunner, Deadline reported. Tomorrow Studios' CEO Marty Adelstein and President Becky Clements are executive producing together with Joe Meloche.
The project is inspired by "the comedian's life experience including the challenges of managing a home life during the few days he spends off the road each week," Deadline wrote. This marks Iglesias' first network pilot after his recurring role in the now cancelled comedy series "Cristela," where he portrayed Roberto, a guy in love with Cristela Alonzo's character.
The 39-year-old comedian created and produced Fuse TV's non-scripted comedy docuseries "Fluffy Breaks Even," which also stars Martin Moreno and Rick Gutierrez, the news outlet added. He did various stand-up comedy specials for Comedy Central and produced and hosted the network's hit show "Stand-up Revolution."
"The concept of the show is basically everything that we're already doing on the road," Iglesias said of "Fluffy Breaks Even," as quoted by People. "We're always going out to get a bite to eat, and we're always trying to find a way to be accountable for it."
Iglesias' film credits include 2014's stand-up concert comedy "The Fluffy Movie," and Warner Bros' "Magic Mike" and its sequel, "Magic Mike XXL." He also had voice roles in animated flicks "Planes," "The Nut Job," and "The Book of Life," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"Film is cool, it's cool to say that you're doing a movie, it's cool to see your face on a poster, it's cool to be at a premiere on the red carpet, all of that is cool. The actual part of making a film is work. It's a lot of work, and sometimes they're good days, and sometimes they're not-so-good days. I've been fortunate that with both 'Magic Mike' films, everybody was super nice. Especially Channing, and the directors - it was great," Iglesias told Maxim of making a movie.
Television Diversity
"The Fluffy Shop" is the latest addition to ABC's new roster of distinctive family comedies, which includes "Modern Family," "Fresh Off the Boat," "Black-ish," "The Middle," "The Goldbergs," and "Dr. Ken," The Hollywood Reporter listed.
Broadcast networks highly prioritize family comedies this season. ABC Studios executive VP Patrick Moran told the news outlet earlier this month that the studio is searching for diverse voices, especially from the Latino community.
"People want to see reflections of themselves in something new," said Jonathan Davis, 20th Century Fox Television's president of creative affairs, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter.
