Android Marshmallow Installation Guide for the Nexus 4

The Android 6.0 Marshmallow update became available on the Nexus 4 just recently, a welcome development to users who were previously disappointed when the update was only made available only on the Nexus 5, 6, 7 and 9.

TechTimes said that Dmitry Grinberg put on great effort to build a Marshamallow version for the Nexus 4, along with a pre built Android Open Source Project (ASOP).

Aside from Grinberg, another developer, Aldrin Holmes, also reportedly released a version of the Marshmallow for the Nexus device.

"Based on user feedback, the ROMs - the one uploaded by vocoderism, which involves a kernel based on what Grinberg built and the one from Holmes, which was released on Oct. 13 --  are working," added TechTimes.

However, Yahoo cautioned users to practice care when installing this update since the ROM is still under development.

It added that the notes of the developer informs users that "the stock browser generates soft reboot when you share location and don't give accuracy for the location services."

It was added in a Neurogadget report that Holmes' version is just 80 percent done and is still being developed and improved.

On the other hand, 9to5Google said the downloads of these updates could take a long time because of the high traffic in the websites. It noted that users can opt to try other mirrors for faster downloads.

For those who would want to have the Android 6.0 Marshmallow AOSP ROM on their Nexus 4, Yahoo said they should download the files to an internal storage with their phones connected to the PC using a cable. Then, the USB cable should be unplugged and the phone switched off.

The following instructions should then be done as per Yahoo:

* Boot your phone into recovery mode.

* In recovery, first create a backup of the current phone setup, which you would be able to restore anytime if something goes wrong with the new ROM. From recovery tap on backup and then do a swipe on the bottom of the screen to confirm the process.

* Perform factory reset with the installation.

* Return to recovery, select Install then Storage. Now browse to the location where you have saved the AOSP ROM, select it and do a swipe on the Swipe to confirm flash option

* When the flashing finishes, repeat the similar process to install Gapps.

* After the installation is completed, select Reboot system to boot the phone.

Nexus 4 users are certainly amused with this update but all should practice care in trying to download this updates for their phones to avoid any failures or loss of data.
