'Shovel Knight' Physical Release for Xbox One Cancelled Due to Issues With Publishing Policies
Yacht Club Games announced that the physical release version of "Shovel Knight" for Xbox One will be delayed.
The video game developer cites "publishing policies" on Xbox One that are "beyond their control" for the cancellation.
"We'll keep fighting to get a retail version on Xbox One," Yacht Club Games continued on their official site. "But as of now, the boxed version is in indefinite limbo. The digital version of 'Shovel Knight' on Xbox One is already available and, of course, will continue to receive new updates and our full support."
According to GameSpot, "Shovel Knight" will hit retail stores starting on Nov. 3 in North America and Oct. 30 in Europe. The PS4, Wii U, 3DS, and the PC release exclusive in Europe will come with the original game and the "Plague of Shadows" expansion, along with a digital version of the soundtrack by Jake Kaufman.
Additional updates planned for the game -- such as Battle mode, the Specter Knight's campaign, and King Knight's campaign, among others - will also be available upon the release of the game, GameSpot noted.
Yacht Club previously said that the physical version of "Shovel Knight" will be priced $19.99 at retail, but it has now climbed up to $24.99.
"Although everyone initially agreed to a $19.99 price point, some retailers ran into trouble with limited space to show off their wares, and the rules in place about where games with certain prices are displayed," the developer explained on their official site. "We didn't want our 'bargain priced' game to go straight to the bargain bin of obscurity, so we had to raise the price."
Yacht Club Games also addressed the Vita version of "Shovel Knight," saying that it will not be shipping this coming holiday and will be delayed until 2016.
"Shovel Knight," which was released initially in June 2014, is "a sweeping classic action adventure game" with an "8-bit retro aesthetic" design, Yacht Club Games' page for "Shovel Knight" indicated. Players control the eponymous protagonist Shovel Knight as he collects treasures, battle evil knights, and to fulfill two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and save his missing loved one.
A review from GameSpot described the game as "a good reminder that game design does age but can never die and that simple mechanics can still be immensely satisfying," adding that it is not just another classic and its "inherent charms are timeless."
