Super Smash Bros. 4 New: New Character Confirmed for Roster, Release Date Still a Mystery

Super Smash Bros. 4 is certainly one of the games that Nintendo fans are waiting for on both the Wii U and 3DS, and fans of the series were certainly happy to hear that Nintendo announced a new character, Princess Rosalina and Luma, was being added to the game. Now, Nintendo has confirmed that another princess character will be added to the game's roster, but this time it is a character fans of the series should be familiar with.

Nintendo has announced through the game's official website that Zelda, the princess from The Legend of Zelda series will be making her third appearance in the series. The new character's announcement seems to come as a holiday gift for fans, as Nintendo had already done their monthly new character announcement for December during a Nintendo Direct. Nintendo also released several screenshots of the character in action, including some with the hero of The Legend of Zelda Link as well as the new character Rosalina.

One interesting tidbit is that Nintendo has only announced Zelda, but not her alter ego Sheik. As most fans of the series know Zelda is able to transform in Super Smash Bros. into Sheik, and the characters play very differently from one another. All of the screenshots only feature Zelda, and leave out Sheik. This most likely means that Nintendo is saving the announcement of Sheik for a later date, as opposed to the character being left out of the game or being made into a completely separate new character. After all, it would be odd to radically change a veteran character to that degree after fans have been using the Zelda/ Sheik combination for over a decade.

With the inclusion of Zelda into the game, The Legend of Zelda franchise is the second most representative series for the series so far. Zelda, Link, and Toon Link are three of the 20 confirmed characters for the game. The only franchise with more confirmed character for Super Smash Bros. 4 than The Legend of Zelda is the Mario series with five fighters confirmed in the game (six if you include Donkey Kong, who premiered with Mario in the arcade era).

Super Smash Bros. 4 is slated to come out sometime in 2014, but so far Nintendo has remained quiet on exactly when the game will be released. The game was rumored to have a release date set in the spring of 2014, but Nintendo quickly shot down those rumors and blamed them on a mistranslation.
