Bill Cosby Stripped of Honorary Degree from : Brown University
A sex scandal can strip you of a lot of things and for Bill Crosby, this includes a Brown University honorary degree.
Reuters reported that Brown University President Christina Paxson made the announcement via an email sent to the university community. The Brown Daily Herald quoted her email, which read, "It has become clear, by his own admission in legal depositions that became public this summer, that Mr. Cosby has engaged in conduct with women that is contrary to the values of Brown and the qualities for which he was honored by the University in 1985."
Brown is the third university so far to strip him of his honors. Others to do so are Fordham University and Marquette University. Central State University, Temple University and Spelman College reportedly already distanced themselves from the disgraced comedian, while the Berklee College of Music in Boston, as well as the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, his alma mater, dropped his name from their programs.
Before the rape allegations started, Cosby has donated millions to different schools and has received as many as 17 honorary degrees from different colleges. He also received a Presidential Medal of Freedom, as well as a Bob Hope Humanitarian Award fro the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
However, victim's rights groups and legislators are calling for Cosby's Medal of Freedom, awarded to him by George W. Bush in 2002, to be revoked. Angela Rose, director of the victims' group Promoting Awarenes, Victim Empowerment (PAVE) organized an online petition for the removal of Cosby's high presidential honor.
Rose also told NBC News, "The Medal of Freedom embodies our nation's values. Allowing Cosby to maintain this coveted symbol suggests that we as a society support coercive sexual behavior. Revoking the medal will send a powerful message to America's youth about the critical importance of consent, which is a freely given, enthusiastic, verbal and sober 'yes,' not the absence of a 'no.'"
According to Atlanta Blackstar, President Barack Obama said that there is no way of revoking a Presidential Medal of Freedom and can't do so in Cosby's case. He also declined to address the allegations directed to the comedian, although he did say at a White House Conference, "I'll say this. If you give a woman -- or a man, for that matter -- without his or her knowledge a drug, and then have sex with that person without consent, that's rape. And I think this country, any civilized country, should have no tolerance for rape."
