Salma Hayek, Oprah Winfrey & More to Be Honored at Variety's Power of Women Event
Salma Hayek is one of the honorees at Variety's upcoming Power of Women Event.
The gathering, to be held on Oct. 9 at Beverly Hills, will also give tributes to Oprah Winfrey, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anna Kendrick, and YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, Variety listed. The event celebrates the most inspirational and charitable women in the entertainment industry.
"The women we are honouring this year are the perfect embodiment of the Power of Women initiative," Variety publisher Michelle Sobrino-Stearns said. "We salute Salma Hayek Pinault, Anna Kendrick, Gwyneth Paltrow, Oprah Winfrey and YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki for their incredible philanthropic work and their personal commitment to fostering change."
Hayek's honor is for co-founding women's rights initiative Chime for Change, Paltrow's is for her efforts in food charity L.A. Kitchen, and Winfrey's recognition comes from her work in her South African school, the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation, Variety wrote.
Kendrick is being recognized for supporting youth suicide prevention group The Trevor Project, and Wojcicki for her work with literacy and equal rights group Room to Read, the news outlet added.
All of the honorees will grace the cover of Variety's Women's Impact issue out on Oct. 6. The Power of Women Event is linked to the publisher's annual Women's Impact Report, which outlines the females who have made the most noteworthy contributions to the entertainment industry.
This year's Power of Women Event expects 500 guests from entertainment and media insiders to attend the gathering and pay homage to the women's philanthropic movements, Variety further wrote. Entertainment Industry Foundation teams up with Variety for the event.
"The work done by Anna, Gwyneth, Oprah, Salma and Susan through their philanthropic efforts has affected the lives of many in diverse and meaningful ways; they each offer an inspiring example of the entertainment community's ability to make a difference," said Lisa Paulsen, president and CEO of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, as reported by Variety.
Salma Hayek's Chime for Change
Chime for Change was founded by Hayek, 49, alongside Beyoncé and Gucci in 2013, Harpers Bazaar wrote.
The Mexican movie star described Chime for Change as "the kind of work that will bring joy to anyone who does it and will bring hope to everyone who lives on this planet," People reported. Hayek also worked with humanitarian organizations such as UNICEF in the past.
Chime for Change pushes for donations to a number of social causes, including helping Kenyan students and deploying medical volunteers to migrants in the Mediterranean, People added. This month, Hayek urged British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Francois Hollande to give more efforts to the current refugee crisis, Harpers Bazaar noted.
