'Furious 8' Trailer, Release Date & Cast: Here's Why Sequel is Stalled
Fans are getting anxious as the eighth sequel to "The Fast and The Furious" remains at the starting point with no one occupying the director's seat.
The movie remains stalled as long as there is no film director on sight with rumors surfacing as to why Universal Pictures was still unable to locate a filmmaker to fill the job.
According to IGN, the absence of a helmer for "Furious 8" is due to some "behind the scenes drama" involving one of the franchise's co-producer and star Vin Diesel.
A report from Screen Rant noted that after gaining its momentum through Justin Lin's "Fast Five" and "Furious 6," the franchise reached a new level of commercial success thanks to "Furious 7" under the direction of James Wan.
However, Wan continues to refuse in returning to the job amidst handsome offers from the studio.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wan had initially declined to do the "Furious 8" because he prefers to direct the sequel of the 2013 horror flick "The Conjuring" under New Line Cinema.
While Universal had initially accepted his decision, they were forced to alter the offer for Wan after Justin Lin had chosen to direct "Star Trek" rather than the franchise's eighth sequel.
Curiously, the 38-year-old helmer still refused what a THR source described as a "life-altering" sum of money for at least one "Fast & Furious" movie, with the director explaining that doing it would mean placing his life on the line.
When asked to explain further, the THR source explained that after Paul Walker's death, the production of "Furious 7" proved to be one job that presented extensive demands with all script rewrites and post-production patches needed.
Aside from that, the outlet's sources also placed a significant amount of the blame to Diesel, describing him to be "extraordinarily difficult."
"As a producer, he is said to have questioned even small details on elaborate action sequences, often holding up the complex production. He also was known to summon filmmakers to repeated late-night script sessions to make him comfortable with his character and dialogue," the report read.
But the actor's camp denied such allegations, shrugging any suggestion about Diesel being difficult to work with as "complete non-sense."
A representative speaking for Wan also denied any issues about on-set friction, saying that the extra pressure that resulted to Walker's death was the only thing they had difficulty handling.
Furious producer Neal Moritz also tossed in some comments, saying: "Obviously, if there was any issue, we wouldn't be making the eighth [film] with [Diesel] right now."
The studio is currently putting out feelers to agents to look for the perfect director for the sequel among a range of newbie helmers as well as "Non-Stop" director Jaume Collet-Serra.
