Wii U News: Nintendo, Showing Lack of Confidence in Consumers, Reminds People That Console is not an Accessory [Video]
In a move that shows that Nintendo may lack faith both in their console and their user base, the company has released a new Wii U advertisement that reminds people that the Wii U is separate from the Wii and is a console and not just an accessory.
The video, which can be seen here as well as in the embedded video below, has a narrator explain to potentially clueless shoppers that the Wii U is not just the Wii U Gamepad, but an entirely new console for people to pick up and play the new generation of Nintendo games on:
"It's time for a whole new Nintendo experience...Wii U is an entirely new technology and true successor to Wii."
This ad is clearly aimed at the massive casual gaming audience that helped the Wii become one of the best selling consoles of all time. These casual gamers bought the Wii in the tens of millions, and Nintendo is hoping to reach at least some of those fans again so that they can help the struggling Wii U. After all, the Wii U has had difficulty throughout 2013 to find an audience, and the console has had pitiful sales numbers every month. Nintendo's theory must be that their former audience is not aware of what the Wii U offers, and must remind them that they will have to upgrade to the Wii U to keep enjoying new content from Nintendo and other publishers.
Nintendo also reminded gamers that the Wii U has many unique features not found in other consoles such as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One such as the Wii U Gamepad:
"Wii U is all about unique experiences you can't have anywhere else."
However, much of the Wii U's unique features have been replicated by other companies. For example, the Wii U Gamepad allows users to use remote play to play the game on the Gamepad's screen instead of the television, freeing it up for use without interrupting gameplay. However, the PlayStation 4 offers remote play through the PlayStation Vita handheld, and Xbox One users can do the game thing for certain games using the Microsoft Smartglass device.
In any case, Nintendo's future is starting to look brighter than it has in quite some time. Since the price of the console has dropped to $299, Nintendo is reporting that the console's monthly sales figures have risen by leaps and bounds. This could mean that the console could be gaining steam and compete with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
