'Charlie's Angels' New Movie: Sony Teams Up With Elizabeth Banks for Spy Film Reboot
Sony has decided to reboot the fan-favorite female spy movie "Charlie's Angels" with "Hunger Games" actress Elizabeth Banks on the director's seat.
Sources of The Wrap revealed that the American actress-filmmaker is under negotiations to helm the new "Charlie's Angels" film with her husband, Max Handelman as a producer partner.
Banks, a 41-year-old actress who played the eccentric Effie Trinket in the film adaptation of the post-apocalyptic "Hunger Games," debuted in the world of filmmaking with the 2015 summer film "Pitch Perfect 2" starring Brittany Snow, Anna Kendrick, and Rebel Wilson, The Wrap noted.
Considering that it is her first try at directing, the newbie director did a great job at the musical movie sequel that earned $183.7 million in the United States alone and more than twice as much than the 2012 original film.
Now, Banks would be undertaking a gigantic franchise should she decide to give it a thumbs up to the partnership with Sony.
The "Angels" were first introduced in a TV series aired in 1976 which focuses on the quests of three female detectives portrayed by Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, and Jaclyn Smith.
The three talented, tough, attractive female agents worked on cases for a secretive benefactor named "Charlie" who sent them the case files through the Angels' sidekick, Bosley.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the TV series shown at Jiggle TV did not immediately become a hit as it was "not taken too seriously."
But after some time, the audience realized the artistry and cleverness behind the storyline and the entire series which led to the show and its charming main characters becoming a breakout hit.
Sony did not let this go unnoticed by the younger generations by re-introducing the "Angels" via a big-screen version released in 2000 dubbed as "Charlie's Angels."
With Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu starring as Dylan Sanders, Natalie Cook and Alex Munday, the "Angels" became more popular than ever.
As expected, the film became a hit that led to a sequel three years after entitled "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" which did not fare very well in the box office, "effectively [killing] the movie franchise."
After that, ABC attempted to create a TV show reboot for the franchise starring Annie Ilonzeh, Minka Kelly, Rachael Taylor but that only lasted eight episodes after it was scrapped, ComingSoon.net noted.
Banks has yet to confirm whether or not she would take on the project while Sony has yet to pick the perfect writer to pen the reboot.
