'Empire' Season 2 Cast, Premiere Date & Spoilers: Becky G Reveals More About Her Role
Becky G's acting chops will be witnessed in the upcoming second season of Fox's "Empire" as a character named Valentina.
In Entertaiment Weekly's interview at the show's Carnegie Hall event in NYC last Saturday, the 18-year-old singer dished on her role and its similarities with the drama's lead character, Taraji P. Henson's Cookie Lyon.
"Well, I play Valentina, and let's just put it this way: they were calling me baby Cookie on set. I'm feisty. Like, the Becky G that's right here and sweet and excited? Valentina is a totally different person," Becky, whose real name is Rebbeca Marie Gomez, told Entertainment Weekly.
Adds the "Lovin' So Hard" singer, playing Valentina was "fun" for her because she loves acting and her "Empire" gig felt right in her gut, the news outlet noted. When asked if her character will have her fair share of drama, Gomez revealed that there will be plenty of it.
"There's a lot of drama. In these next few episodes - and even stuff that I'm not going to be in but I was reading in the script - I was like, 'I can't believe this is going to go down. Everybody's going to be so surprised.' But yeah, especially my scenes, for sure," she said, as quoted by Entertainment Weekly.
Co-creator Lee Daniels said at the Carnegie Hall event that the series' success was due to a largely black cast that was introduced "at a time of great tension in race relations, following a string of questionable deaths of black men at the hands of police officers," Variety wrote.
"Where we are in America with race relations is an ugly place," Daniels said, as reported by Variety. "It's time we tear the roof off this mother--. It's time we see that we are all one."
Aside from Gomez, Season 2 of "Empire" will feature Mariah Carey, Ludacris, Alicia Keys, Chris Rock, Lenny Kravitz, Kelly Rowland as Lucious' (Terrence Howard) mother in flashbacks, and Marisa Tomei as a billionaire venture capitalist who gets involved with Empire Entertainment, E! News listed.
Adam Rodriguez will also join the show's upcoming season as Cookie's love interest, the news outlet added. There's Tyra Ferrell as a lawyer and Andre Royo as Thirsty Rawlings, also an attorney with a dark past and who begins working alongside Lucious, TVLine wrote.
A separate report from TVLine added that Season 2 will feature Adam Busch in a recurring role as well. According to Deadline, Busch will portray Chase One, "a sexy, gifted, avant-garde gay artist who's doing a photo shoot, and is infatuated with his male star."
"Empire" returns on Fox on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 9:00 PM.
